MSSU men's golf team wins Holiday Inn Express Classic; three finish in top 10 individually

Oct. 10—The Missouri Southern State University men's golf team won the Holiday Inn Express Classic at the St. Joseph Country Club Tuesday.

The Lions shot an 850 overall team score that placed Southern at the top of the team leaderboard, winning by 13 strokes. Three Lions finished in the top 10 as well.

Tradgon McCrae led the Lions with a 205 total score, shooting a tournament-low 64 in round two, and finished second overall individually of the 96 total competitors.

Ben Marckmann finished fifth overall individually after shooting a 207 total score over the three rounds.

Luis Lemón shot a total score of 214, which tied him for eighth overall individually at the Classic.

Zach Gardner shot a 224 total score and finished tied for 48th individually.

Connor Williamson rounded out team play for the Lions, shooting a 238 total score, which tied for 90th individually.

Carson Stookey competed for the Lions as well as an individual, shooting a 240 total score and placing 92nd overall.

The men's golf team will travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, Oct. 15-17 as it competes in the NCAA Super Regional Preview at Kickingbird Golf Club.

Women's golf

The Women's golf team wrapped up its final round Tuesday at The Falls at Grand Falls Casino for the USF Invitational in Larchwood, Iowa, shooting a 617 overall team score that meant the Lions tied for fourth overall.

Emmerson Doyle led the Lions with a 145 total score and finished second overall individually of the 74 competitors.

Iratxe Fernandez-Cano Aldasoro finished tied for 14th overall individually after shooting a 152 total score over the two rounds.

Aida Nunez shot a total score of 157, which placed 21st overall individually at the Invitational.

Lily Allman shot a 163 total score and finished tied for 37th individually.

Kyra Simon rounded out team play for the Lions, shooting a 164 total score that secured her tied for 40th individually.

Jenna Teeter competed for the Lions as well as an individual, shooting a 165 total score and placing 43rd overall.

The MSSU Women's Golf team will travel to Warrensburg Oct. 15-17 for the Midwest Classic at Mules National Golf Club.

VolleyballThe MSSU volleyball team lost 3-0 to the Missouri Western Griffons Tuesday evening at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Southern falls to 11-7 (4-5 MIAA) with the loss.

MSSU won the first three points of the match, but ultimately dropped the first set, which featured multiple runs by both teams, 25-18. The Griffons used a late push to take the second set, 25-21, and won the third set 26-24.

Kyra Thomas led the Lions in kills, finishing with a .217 hitting percentage. She also had four block assists in the match. Hannah Allick had the team-high in assists, collecting 24 on the evening. Sydney Unruh recorded 19 digs and Fernanda Canedo had 13.

Missouri Southern travels to Fort Hays State and then Nebraska-Kearney on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
