MPSSAA region track & field championships: Washington County Public Schools roundup

The road to the Maryland State Track & Field Championships continued Thursday for Washington County athletes at region meets.

North Hagerstown and South Hagerstown competed in the final day of of the Class 3A West championships at Oakdale, while Williamsport was in action at Century as 2A West wrapped up. The 1A West championships, involving Boonsboro, Clear Spring, Hancock and Smithsburg, concluded Wednesday.

Track & field: Smithsburg girls, North Hagerstown boys win county team titles

The top two finishers in each event in each region automatically advance to next week's state meet at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex. The next top eight times or marks from all four region meets in each classification also advance, as do those who achieve the advancement standards in their events during the region meets.

Here's what happened:

3A West Day 2

Deontae Blake captured a pair of titles for the South Hagerstown boys, placing first in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best time of 50.30 seconds and teaming with Cahauri Alford, Felix Annan and Cassius Freeman to win the 4x100 relay (44.24).

North Hagerstown's Lauren Stine, who won the 3,200 on Wednesday, achieved a milestone in the 1,600 on Thursday, winning the race in 4:59.54 to become the third high school girl in Washington County history to break the 5-minute barrier.

The North boys got second-place finishes from Odin Desir in the 200 (22.55) and Ryder Johnston in the 300 hurdles (39.23).

Second-place finishers for the South boys included Jack Rhodes in the discus (128-7) and Wisdom Moses in the triple jump (42-5 3/4).

The South athletes who achieved the advancement standards Thursday included Riley Troxell in the girls pole vault (fifth, 8-9),Trinity Savage in the girls long jump (fifth, 16-4 3/4) and Blake in the boys 200 (third, 22.75).

Meeting the standards for North were Anna Chamberlin in the girls high jump (third, 5-0), Rian Johnson (third, 2:19.54) and Stine (eighth, 2:22.31) in the girls 800 and Johnston, Nathan Silla, Sullivan McGreevy and Donovan Baldwin in the boys 4x400 (third, 3:26.65).

2A West Day 2

Williamsport's Richard Sanon extended his win streak in the boys 110 hurdles to six straight meets, taking the region title in 14.98 seconds.

Wednesday

1A West Day 2

The Smithsburg girls won their third straight region team title, finishing with 175 points. Allegany was a distant runner-up with 109.5.

The Leopards took first place in three events Wednesday, getting wins from Amelia Beck-Schmieder in the 100 hurdles (17.15), Taylor King in the 300 hurdles (49.23) and Grace Ellis, Kayla Hawbecker, King and Jenna Howe in the 4x400 (4:09.08).

Howe also had second-place finishes in the 100 (12.73), 200 (26.20) and 400 (58.59).

Other second-place finishers for the Smithsburg girls included Hawbecker in the 800 (2:23.31), Cora Gentzel in the 1,600 (5:19.66) and Lillian Hade, Alaina Pate, King and Melyssa Bard in the 4x100 (52.49).

The Smithsburg girls who met the state-advancement standards included Alaina Pate in the 100 (third, 13.02), Leah Howe in the 100 hurdles (third, 17.21), Gentzel (fourth, 2:25.44) and Ellis (seventh, 2:27.59) in the 800, Hawbecker (third, 5:28.95) and Michaela Gross (fourth, 5:29.22) in the 1,600 and Lily Proctor in the shot put (fifth, 31-6 1/2).

Other girls who achieved the standards inlcuded Clear Spring's Kailyn McCauley (third, 35-1) and Katelyn Moffitt (fourth, 31-10 1/2) in the shot put and Boonsboro's Caroline Matthews in the 1,600 (fourth, 5:29.22) and Sidney Turner in the shot put (sixth, 31-2 3/4).

Clear Spring's Nick Cullember had the top place finish among Washington County boys Wednesday, taking second in the discus (145-6).

Several county boys achieved advancement standards. They included:

• Smithsburg's Levi Miller in the 100 (fourth, 11.59), Tyler Younker in the 800 (eighth, 2:03.46), Michael Wynkoop in the 1,600 (fourth, 4:34.87), Ah'Ryan White in the 300 hurdles (fourth, 42.54), John Flint in the pole vault (fifth, 11-7) and Miller, Ethan Hurd, Charles Gaston and White in the 4x100 (fifth, 45.10).

• Clear Spring's Daniel Apiou (third, 41-11) and Jacob Faith (fifth, 40-11 3/4) in the triple jump and Benjamin Myers (sixth, 123-1) in the discus.

• Hancock's Waylon Leach in the discus (seventh, 122-10).

3A West Day 1

North Hagerstown's Lauren Stine, the defending state champion in the girls 3,200, cruised to victory in that event, winning by 15 seconds in 11:15.50.

South Hagerstown placed second in the girls 4x200 as Wynter Cephus, Ajayah Alexander, Trinity Savage and Jessica Franklin combined to run 1:48.09.

The North boys automatically qualified for states in two events by meeting the advancement standards. For the Hubs, Walker Mason ran 9:48.56 in the 3,200 to place fifth, and Donovan Baldwin, Sullivan McGreevy, Dishaan Patel and Adam Mustafa finished fifth in the 4x800 in 8:14.38.

2A West Day 1

A pair of Williamsport athletes qualified for states by achieving advancement standards.

Masiah Martin cleared 6 feet in the boys high jump to place third, and Olivia Smith went 8-10 in the girls pole vault to place fourth.

Monday

1A West Day 1

Washington County athletes placed first in two events.

Clear Spring's Jacob Faith won the boys high jump (6-4), and Smithsburg's Grace Ellis, Kayla Hawbecker, Michaela Gross and Cora Gentzel teamed up to win the girls 4x800 relay (9:53.08).

Second-place finishers included Boonsboro's Derrick Jones in the boys high jump (5-11) and Caroline Matthews in the girls 3,200 (12:04.14), Smithsburg's Lily Proctor in the girls discus (98-2) and the Leopards' Lilian Hade, Taylor King, Melyssa Bard and Alaina Pate in the girls 4x200 (1:47.82).

Several county athletes achieved the advancement standards.

They included, for the Smithsburg boys: Camilo Mellott (fourth, 10:23.69), Michael Wynkoop (eighth, 10:26.35) and Dylan Herbst (12th, 10:30.55) in the 3,200; Levi Miller, Ethan Hurd, Charles Gaston and Ah'Ryan White in the 4x200 (third, 1:32.80); Tyler Younker, Wynkoop, Lucas Reyes and Mellott in the 4x800 (fourth, 8:24.62); Walker Hughes in the shot put (44-4 1/4); and Jacob Tyler in the high jump (third, 5-11).

For the Smithsburg girls, Cora Gentzel (third, 12:09.64) and Michaela Gross (fifth, 12:22.83) advanced in the 3,200, as did Aliyah Wygant in the discus (fifth, 94-9), Emilia Spithaler in the triple jump (tied for fourth, 32-6) and Hade (fourth, 8-9) and Alexandria Spithaler in the pole vault.

Other state qualifiers in the girls pole vault included Clear Spring's Dana Hammond (tied for fifth, 8-3) and Lucy Enow (ninth, 7-9) and Boonsboro's Breann Reed (10th, 7-9).

Other qualifiers for the Clear Spring boys included Nick Cullember in the shot put (fifth, 43-10 1/4) and Daniel Apiou in the high jump (tied for fifth, 5-9).

For the Hancock boys, Logan Trumpower advanced in the high jump (tied for fifth, 5-9) and Waylon Leach met the standard in the shot put (seventh, 42-1).
