Monroe County Region football stat leaders after six games

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford football coach Todd Thieken knows exactly why defensive back Kolby Masserant leads the Monroe County Region in interceptions this season.

It all starts in the film room.

“When we watch film, Kolby is locked in,” Thieken said. “He’ll see a formation on film, that when we get to game time, he’s sitting back there, and he anticipates what the other team is going to run. He and Ryin (Ruddy) communicate so well with one another.”

Masserant leads the Region in interceptions with six through six games – just one off the school’s single-season record.

“We just trust each other,” Masserant said. “The players trust each other, and they trust the coaches.”

Masserant’s six picks are two more than Carlson’s Jackson Zachary, who is No. 2 on the Region leaders list with four.

Masserant has been locked in on offense, too, where he leads the Bobcats with seven touchdown receptions so far this season and is third in the Region in receiving yards with 440. Dundee’s Braiden Whitaker is far and away the Region leader in that category with 682.

Whiteford receiver Kolby Masserant has caught at least one touchdown pass in five of Whiteford's six game this season. He also leads the Monroe County Region with six interceptions.

A pair of Flat Rock players – quarterback Graham Junge (1,224) and running back Brian Booms (879) lead in the passing yards and rushing yards categories. Booms is second in scoring with 16 touchdowns and 100 points. Izaiah Wright of Carlson, who is second in rushing with 819 yards, leads the Region in touchdowns with 20 and points with 122.

Junge passed Erie Mason’s Vaughn Brown, who sat out week six due to a knee injury. Brown is second in passing yards with 1,213. Mason head coach Steven Bowers said he expects Brown to return.

“He came walking by my classroom limping on Monday,” Bowers said. “He stayed off of it all week and by Thursday or Friday, it was clear he wouldn’t be able to go. I think he’ll be back.”
