WEDNESDAY'S GIRLS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS

Junior Caitlyn Holmes is 3-for-3 in City Series basketball postseason championships.

Holmes and classmate Sanaiiya Gray led Ellet to a 55-41 win over Buchtel on Wednesday night at Firestone.

Holmes scored 27 points and had seven rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocks. She was recognized as the City Series Player of the Year before the game.

“We started off hot [and led 18-5 at the end of the first quarter],” Holmes said. “It was highly anticipated, but we knew this was in the bag.”

Gray finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, seven blocks, five steals and three assists. She was selected as the City Series Defensive Player of the Year.

“We deserved this and we have definitely worked hard enough in the City and outside of the City with the nonconference games,” Gray said.

Ellet coach Nick Harris described Holmes and Gray as “special” and “smart players.”

“They work their butts off, they lead and they are selfless,” Harris said. “I told them every game from here on out is a big game.”

Freshman Saniya Williams contributed six points for Ellet (15-5).

Senior Peighton Valentine paced Buchtel (10-9) with 11 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Phoenix Hafford scored 10 points and senior Ameena Vincent totaled seven points, eight rebounds and two assists.

“I always tell everybody it is really hard to win a City championship,” Harris said. “People from around try to discredit things. They don’t understand the intensity and the passion that every girl in the City has for this. Buchtel carries a great coach [Cari Guyton]. They have gotten better this year and they have won a couple of games out of conference. They played us pretty tough last time [in a regular season game], so they had the confidence they could win.

“... I was really proud of the girls for coming out here and jumping on them and showing them that championship pedigree and experience."

Copley 48, Waynedale 46 Copley (18-2) traveled to Wayne County and earned a win over the Golden Bears (13-4) with five players — Izzy Callaway (19 points), Kami Ayoup (11), Audrey Parker (10), Evelyn McKnight (five) and Zoey Van Voorhis (three) —doing all of the scoring.

Stow 73, Canton McKinley 32 Seniors Anna Hurst and Alaina Ray scored 15 points apiece to lead host Stow (16-3) past McKinley (7-12) in a matchup of Bulldogs. Stow’s Kennady Dodds contributed 14 points and Rachel Frailey added 11 points.

CVCA 40, Canton South 30 Joi Williams scored 20 points and Elizabeth Fisher had nine to lead the host Royals (16-2, 12-1) over the Wildcats (11-6, 9-4) in a Principals Athletic Conference game.

Green 49, Perry 37 Jenna Slates scored 21 points and Sydney Shocklee added 10 points to propel the visiting Bulldogs.

Brush 63, St. Vincent-St. Mary 47 STVM retired Kara Murphy Gooden’s No. 24 jersey during a halftime ceremony. Murphy scored 1,661 points in 87 games during her time at STVM and then scored 1,777 points in 123 games at the University of Akron. She earned All Mid-American Conference honors all four years at Akron, is No. 2 on the Zips' all-time scoring list behind Rachel Tecca (2,317 points) and was inducted into the University of Akron Athletics Hall of Fame last year. Brush (17-3) won the game with Chaniyra McDowell-Isaacs scoring 17 points, Brooklynn Vickers adding 16 and Tatiana Mason chipping in 12. Kendal Batchik scored 15 points for STVM (13-4).

Tuesday's results: Hoban basketball coach T.K. Griffith earns 500th win

BOYS BASKETBALL HIGHLIGHTS

Hoban boys basketball coach TK Griffith calls plays from the sideline, Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.
Hoban boys basketball coach TK Griffith calls plays from the sideline, Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.

T.K. Griffith earned his 500th win as the Hoban boys basketball coach Tuesday night when the Knights defeated Holy Name 81-52 at Barry Gymnasium.

Senior Jonas Nichols scored 32 points to lead Hoban (11-6) past Holy Name (9-7).  Hoban’s Kenny Scott and Andrew Karhoff scored 11 points apiece. Sam Greer added 10 points and Sam Mazzola, Tyler Shadeed and Josh Greer contributed five points each.

Griffith, a 1989 Hoban graduate, took over as Hoban’s boys basketball coach ahead of the 1993-1994 season and has a 500-213 record. He guided the Knights to a Division I state title a year ago. He also won a championship his senior year as a player.

“I have a ton of gratitude for the people who gave me an opportunity to coach when I was 21 years old,” Griffith said. “A ton of gratitude for the people who have stuck with me when we had some thin years and all of the players who have helped shape my life and helped me grow through all of the adversity of what coaching brings to your day-to-day life.”

Griffith, 52, is in his third year as Hoban’s principal, too, and 31st year as an English teacher at Hoban. He also served five years as the school’s director of admissions.

“It is special to be a part of something bigger than yourself, like a Hoban,” Griffith said. “Sometimes I don’t know where I end and Hoban begins or where Hoban ends and I begin. It is synonymous with my life. I am happy that we have had more success than failure. I have over 210 losses. Sometimes those losses are more important than the wins. They re-allign you and they humble you.”

Nichols, who has 87 points the last three games, said Griffith “always wants to get better at coaching the game of basketball.”

“He has helped me on the court and off the court,” said Nichols, who is Hoban’s all-time leading scorer with 1,427 career points. “On the court, he has talked to me about not forcing shots, letting the game come to you and having that next play mentality.”

Nichols became Hoban’s all-time leading scorer Jan. 25 when he scored 33 points in a 76-41 win at home over Spire.

STVM was led by DeCarlo Prince (15 points, 5 rebounds), Rayshawn Hamilton (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) and Jayson Walker (9 points, 7 assists). A 3-pointer by Prince at the buzzer before halftime gave STVM (8-11) a 35-33 lead it never relinquished. A Marconi 3-pointer with 3:53 left got Stow within 55-53, but three big rebounds from STVM senior Michael Walter helped seal the Irish win. Stow was led by Reece Raymond-Smith (25 points, 4 assists) and Marconi (15 points).
