Mock trade has Nets trading Spencer Dinwiddie for Evan Fournier, second-round picks

The Brooklyn Nets have some time to relax before training camp begins in the fall. Since the offseason still has some time left, it’s a good time to ponder any hypothetical trades just to give our brains some exercise.

Spencer Dinwiddie is one of those players on the Nets that the team needs if it’s going to make it to the playoffs and beyond next season. However, it is fair to wonder if Brooklyn still needs Dinwiddie on the team is he is not the starting point guard.

Assuming that Ben Simmons is able to stay healthy and get back his confidence that made him an All-Star during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers, Simmons would most likely start while Dinwiddie would come off the bench. Is that the best role for Dinwiddie who would start for a good amount of teams in the league?

This mock trade suggested by James Piercey of the NBA Analysis Network is an interesting one to think about regarding Dinwiddie:

The Mock Trade:

Brooklyn Nets receive: Evan Fournier, 2024 second-round pick (MIA via NYK), 2024 second-round pick (DET via NYK), and 2025 second-round pick (BKN via NYK)

New York Knicks receive: Spencer Dinwiddie

Should the Nets do this trade?

Getting Evan Fournier and three second-round picks for Dinwiddie could be considered a good haul for Dinwiddie, especially if he is not the starting point guard for the 2023-24 season. While Fournier has had an inconsistent role in his two seasons with the Knicks due to what seems to be issues between him and head coach Tom Thibodeau, Fournier is still a player who can shoot the ball well and score the basketball when he gets into a rhythm. Fournier on the Nets could fill a Joe Harris type of role and with the offensive struggles that the team tends to have, getting Fournier would be a welcomed move on that end.

Losing Dinwiddie would be a big loss for Brooklyn in the sense that he is one of the few players on the team that can be an effective table-setter for the offense while being able to score as well. While Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson can handle the basketball, it seems that they are more comfortable off the ball so that they can focus on scoring. However, if Dinwiddie is not the starting point guard, it appears that he would be more valuable on another team and the Nets could get some value for him.

Verdict: No, the Nets should not do this trade.
