MLB Roundup: Yankees' Jeter, Granderson work out; Red Sox activate Drew

Injured New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter took batting practice for the first time in nearly three weeks, fielded grounders and ran on the field at the team's minor-league complex in Tampa, Fla.

Jeter is working his way back from a broken left ankle and subsequent ankle surgery last October. He hasn't played in a game since he experienced soreness in the ankle after four at-bats as a designated hitter in a minor-league game during spring training on March 23.

The 38-year-old Yankees captain took four rounds of batting practice, played catch, took ground balls at shortstop and made throws to first base. For the second straight day, Jeter ran between the foul lines in the outfield grass at less than full speed.

Injured center fielder Curtis Granderson joined Jeter for the workout. Granderson caught line drives and fouls balls in the outfield while wearing a brace to protect the broken right forearm he suffered at the beginning of spring training. He hopes to begin throwing Thursday.

---The Boston Red Sox activated shortstop Stephen Drew from the seven-day concussion disabled list and optioned shortstop Jose Iglesias to triple-A Pawtucket, according to reports Wednesday.

Drew, who has a one-year, $9.5 million contract in 2013, was hit by a pitch on his helmet a month ago during spring training and the Red Sox have monitored his condition closely for the past few weeks.

In Drew's absence, the Red Sox started Iglesias at shortstop in six of their seven games to open the season. Iglesias batted an impressive .450 (9 for 20) with with three runs scored an an RBI.

---The Cincinnati Reds placed left-hander Sean Marshall on the disabled list and called up reliever Logan Ondrusek from Triple-A.

Marshall had not pitched during the first week of the season because of shoulder fatigue until he worked a scoreless inning on Sunday. The Reds called Marshall's injury tendinitis and said an MRI showed no structural damage.

---The Texas Rangers placed starting pitcher Matt Harrison on the 15-day disabled list with a lower-back strain and recalled right-hander Justin Grimm from Triple-A. The move with Harrison is retroactive to Saturday. He has experienced back soreness for the past two weeks.

Harrison was 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA to start the season, allowing five earned runs in losses to the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Angels. Grimm, who will start the Rangers' series opener on Thursday night in Seattle, won his only start for triple-A Round Rock this season, allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings. He started twice for the Rangers last year.

---Right-hander John Lackey was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Boston Red Sox, who recalled right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson from Triple-A to fill Lackey's roster spot.

Lackey was diagnosed with a right biceps strain, but the Red Sox said there is no structure damage to his arm.

Lackey, who had not pitched since Sept. 2011, left Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning after hurting his right arm while delivering a pitch. The 34-year-old was coming back from Tommy John surgery. It was feared that he may have re-injured his elbow, but an MRI revealed no damage. It is not clear how long Lackey will be out.

---The Toronto Blue Jays claimed outfielder Casper Wells off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and designated right-hander Alex Burnett for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster. Wells, 28, was taken off Seattle's roster last week to make way for outfielder Jason Bay before Opening Day.
