Mitchell Trubisky limited in practice for Bears, status uncertain for Sunday

The Chicago Bears don’t have the NFC North wrapped up or anything, but they also don’t need to push Mitchell Trubisky back before he’s ready to return.

Trubisky missed the Bears’ Thanksgiving game with a right shoulder injury, and he’s no sure thing to play this Sunday either. Bears coach Matt Nagy said he didn’t anticipate Trubisky would practice on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Nagy told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that he didn’t know if Trubisky could play this week.

Officially Trubisky was listed as limited in practice, but Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune said in the open portion of practice Trubisky did only footwork drills and no throwing.

Nagy sounded optimistic about Trubisky’s progress.

“I think the time was good for him,” Nagy said. “I don’t know his exact pain tolerance or level right now but I definitely think his arrow is up.”

All signs at the moment indicate Trubisky could miss another game, though he has some time to improve. If Trubisky does miss another game, the Bears have shown they can win without him.

Chase Daniel filled in well for Mitchell Trubisky

Chase Daniel didn’t play a great game against the Lions, but he was good enough to win. The Bears are built around their defense, and while Trubisky has had a solid season, the offense just needs to be good enough most weeks.

Against the Lions, Daniel was 27-of-37 for 230 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Bears will win a lot of games if their quarterback is relatively efficient and avoids mistakes, which Daniel can be.

The Bears play at the New York Giants this week, and the Bears should be able to beat the 3-8 Giants with or without Trubisky. They’d rather have their quarterback return to the lineup, but considering they lead the division by a game-and-a-half and appear to be a great bet to make the playoffs, they won’t set Trubisky back by rushing him.
