Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has announced preliminary totals for the 2023 spring turkey season.

Wisconsin turkey hunters registered 42,439 birds this season, a 7% increase from the five-year average.

The 2023 spring season started April 15 with the two-day youth hunt for hunters younger than 16. A total of 2,972 birds were registered, a 28% increase from the five-year average.

The regular season was divided into six separate one-week periods from April 19 to May 30. These separate periods help maximize hunter opportunities while minimizing interference for a more sustainable harvest.

A total of 246,428 authorizations were available this spring, and hunters applied for 223,503 of them.

Given the robust participation and harvest numbers across the state, it’s clear there were abundant opportunities this season.

The deadline to apply for next spring’s 2024 turkey season is Dec. 10.

The DNR reminds ATV/UTV riders to have fun and stay safe on the trails by always wearing a helmet and seatbelt while out on trails and ATV routes.

So far this year, 11 fatalities have resulted from ATV/UTV crashes. Most of the people involved were not wearing seat belts or helmets.

Make the safety of you and your passengers a top priority by doing the following:

  • Ride sober as alcohol is a top contributing factor in fatal and non-fatal crashes;

  • Ride at a speed that allows you to be aware of what’s around you and ahead of you at all times;

  • Wear your helmet, seat belt and protective clothing; and

  • Use extra caution when operating on pavement.

One of the best things ATV and UTV operators can do to operate safely is to take an online safety course. A list of approved safety education classes is available on the DNR Safety Education webpage. Remember, all operators born after Jan. 1, 1988, are legally required to take the course.

Wisconsin law requires every operator involved in a crash incident to report the incident without delay to law enforcement officials.

In addition, within 10 days of the incident, the operator must submit a written report to the DNR.

For more about ATV and UTV recreation in Wisconsin, visit the DNR’s ATV/UTV riding in Wisconsin webpage.

That’s it for this week, so have fun in the great outdoors.
