Minnesota United loose Kervin Arriaga for season

Minnesota United lost a second midfielder to a season-ending knee injury this season and will fill the gap with a familiar face.

The Loons announced Thursday that Kervin Arriaga suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee — similar to Robin Lod’s injury in May. United won’t be left short-handed, however.

MNUFC traded with Nashville SC for Jan Gregus. The Loons sent $75,000 in General Allocation Money and a 2024 second-round pick to Nashville.

Gregus, 32, is under contract through the 2023 season, with a club option for 2024. He is earning $266,750 this season, per MLSPA.

The Loons looked elsewhere for a midfield replacement for Arriaga this week, but once negotiations with one player ended, the front office landed on Gregus, who returns with an understanding of how manager Adrian Heath wants to play and has builtx relationships within the club.

Gregus originally came to Minnesota as a Designated Player in 2019 and was cog in midfield for two seasons, dishing out 14 primary assists across 2019-20. His playing time diminished in 2021 and he then appeared in 27 matches for San Jose Earthquakes in 2022. With Nashville, he has played only 223 minutes this season.

Arriaga had missed training this week after playing in the Leagues Cup group-stage match against Chicago Fire last Thursday and will soon have surgery, the club said. He played in 16 matches, scoring two goals and providing two assists in 1,006 minutes.
