Mile posts: Items on Kassie Parker, Cody Baele, Ean Caskey, Pasca Myers, Spencer Moon, Mattison Plummer, Ainsley Erzen, Peter Shippy

Kassie Parker is back doing what she does best: Setting NCAA records and leading off this edition of the WEEKEND UPDATE of the best performances by Iowa-based collegiate and postcollegiate distance runners and triathletes.

The Loras College graduate student set the NCAA Division III all-time 5,000-meter record by taking down a mark from a fellow Iowan, former Wartburg College great Missy Buttry, at the Payton Jordan Invitational on the campus of Stanford University Friday. The former Clayton Ridge (Guttenberg) prep ran 15 minute, 37.00 seconds to eclipse the mark of 15:37.48 set by Buttry, a former Shenandoah athlete, set on April 17, 2003. Parker was the second-best collegian, behind only Utah's Emily Venters (15:26.30), and seventh overall in the stacked field. The top five women were all professionals or running unattached.

This is the second NCAA Division III outdoor record Parker has set this season. Parker also reset her own 10,000-meter record by running 32:36.22 on the same Stanford track on March 31. That time was more than 27 seconds better than her previous mark.

Also Friday, former Iowa Western Community College great Yonas Mogos finished eighth in the men's section 2 of the 5,000 meters in 14:13.81. The Utah State junior ran 14:13.81.

Moving to the roads, where Northern Iowa assistant track and field coach Alexina (Wilson) Teubel closed well to finish sixth at Tuesday's USA 1 Mile Road Championships in downtown Des Moines. The Panther school record holder and former Mount Vernon/Lisbon prep star ran 4:31, the same time as third-place Addy Wiley, fourth-place Colleen Quigley and fifth-place Shannon Osika. Teubel is a Cedar Rapids resident who has competed in several U.S. national championships and trials in the 3,000 steeplechase.

Also competing and finishing 14th was former Ballard (Huxley) prep star and Minnesota All-American Abby Kohut-Jackson. The Saint Louis University graduate student ran 4:40. The winner was former Arkansas star Nikki Hiltz in 4:28.

In the men's pro competition, former Iowa All-Big Ten performer and 3,000 steeplechase record holder Nathan Mylenek finished 14th in 4:10. Mylenek is now a resident of Ann Arbor, Mich. The winner was Sam Prakel of Versailles, Ohio, in 4:02.

The event was part of the annual Grand Blue Mile, which celebrated its 14th year. Taking the overall victory was former Grand View University and Osage star Ben Huftalin of Ankeny in 4:25. He held off Isaiah Warning of Winona, Minn., by one second. Runablaze Iowa's Ben Jaskowiak, a former Drake University runner, was third in 4:31. Jaskowiak lives in Cumming. Former East Marshall and Northwestern College runner Caleb Benzing of West Des Moines was fourth in 4:34, with teammate Tyson Wieland and Tyler Lance fifth and sixth. Wieland, a former Johnston High and Iowa Central Community College athlete living in Des Moines, ran 4:38. Lance, who lives in Algona, was clocked in 4:40.

Emma Stanley, a top Iowa prep living in Ames, was the women's winner of the Grand Blue Mile in 5:29. Stanley was three seconds ahead of Jennifer Stanley of New York.

Noah Rasmussen of the Lincoln (Neb.) Running Club denied Runablaze Iowa's Cody Baele a victory in the featured Drake Relays Road Races 10K race on a chilly Sunday morning below freezing in Des Moines. Rasmussen and Baele, a Des Moines resident, dueled in the 55th annual event before Rasmussen held off Baele at the finish on the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium in 29:33. Baele, who was 13th overall at the recent Cherry Blossom 10-mile race, ran 29:35.

Baele's teammate, former Dubuque Senior and Iowa Central Community College athlete Blake Whalen, was in the lead group for most of the race before settling for third in 30:06.

Former Iowa runner and current Cedar Rapids Prairie assistant track coach Matt Lorenz of Swisher was next across the line in 30:42. Running Wild Elite's Trevor Albert set a new club record of 30:45 and placed fifth. Albert is a former Grand View University and Cardinal (Eldon) star. Former Wartburg star Sam Pinkowski finished sixth two seconds back in 30:47 to help Runablaze clinch the team title. Southeastern Community College coach and RWE's Lucas Keifer ran the No. 2 time in club history, a 30:55 effort, that earned him seventh. Keifer, a Burlington resident, dropped 1:21 off his previous best for the distance. Runablaze's Adam Bohach, a former Luther College and South Winneshiek star now living in rural Cresco, was eighth in 31:19, 18 seconds off his personal best.

Ean Caskey of Lisbon now has swept all of the major Iowa masters records up through the half marathon. The former Iowa Conference champion at Cornell College and Lisbon resident set the 40 and over record for 10K by running 31:26. That time improves on the mark of 31:51 set by Rick Scupham of West Des Moines at the Drake Road Races event in 1989. Caskey, 41, had run the No. 2 Iowa time in Iowa history a year ago at Drake, a 32:09. His time is No. 3 in RWE history.

Former Wartburg runner and current Runablaze athlete Caleb Appleton was 11th in 31:33 and Dubuque native and former Luther College athlete Michael Eyres was 12th in 31:50.

Claiming the overall women's title and helping Runablaze win that team title was former Grandma's Marathon champion Pasca Myers. The resident of Ames ran 36:26 to win by 12 seconds over former Mount Mercy NAIA national runner-up and former Marion athlete Andrea Ertz. Ertz, now residing in Marion, set a new RWE team record with her time.

Running a lifetime best and placing third was Runablaze athlete and former Luther runner Flannery Cerbin-Bohach in 36:47. The rural Cresco resident's previous best was 37:00. Runablaze's Elaina Biechler, a former Mount Pleasant and Coe College athlete, ensured Runablaze's team win with a fourth-place finish in 37:38. Running the No. 2 and No. 3 times in RWE history were Megan Mooberry of Osage and Becca Mallon of North Liberty. Mooberry, a former Osage High and Northern State runner, was timed in 38:04. Mallon, a former Northern Iowa and Davenport Assumption athlete, was sixth in 38:29.

Former University of Iowa student Brooke Slayman of Solon claimed victory in the women's half marathon in 1:18:30, a 6-minute pace per mile. Taking runner-up honors was former Iowa City West and Iowa athlete Gabby Skopec of Coralville in 1:23:06.

The top four finishers in the men's half marathon were from out of state, paced by Leif Klarqvist's 1:11:04 time. Klarqvist is from Roseville, Minn. The top Iowa resident was former Fort Madison prep Eric Dirth of Des Moines in 1:12:29.

Moving to Sunday's Glass City Marathon, where RWE's Dan Froeschle finished eighth overall while running 2:25:29, a 15-second career improvement. The RWE athlete and former Davenport Assumption prep ran the No. 2 time in club history. His wife, Kasey, was 12th in 3:01:40, which also is No. 2 in club history. Kasey (Zielinski) Froeschle improved her time by 4:28.

Moving back to the track, where Simpson College, Wartburg and Loras athletes were competing at the Phil Esten Challenge hosted by the the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Simpson junior Spencer Moon broke a 39-year-old school record in finishing second in the 10,000 meters. The former South Central Calhoun prep ran 29:27.19 to erase Danny Bauer's mark from 1984 by almost 25 seconds. Moon owns the 21st-best time in Division III history. Loras senior Luke Guttormson ran to a sixth-place finish 30:43.81, which ranks seventh best in program history and is a new personal-best time. Simpson sophomore Andrew Klein, a former Des Moines Lincoln runner, ran 31:27.16 for the seventh-best time in Storm history. The winner was Wisconsin-Whitewater's Gunner Schlender in 29:20.58.

In the 3,000 steeplechase, Wartburg freshman Lance Sobaski took runner-up honors in 9:07.37. He is a former Washington High prep. Sophomore teammate Connor Lancial, a former Council Bluffs Lewis Central prep, ran 9:16.60 for third. Another Knights sophomore, Clay Pehl, was fourth in 9:17.80. Pehl is a former Madrid athlete from Ankeny.

Wartburg junior Christopher Collet also ran to a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 after crossing in 3:55.28. The winner was Michigan Tech's Samuel Lange in 3:49.71.

Former Southeast Polk prep Mattison Plummer picked up a victory in the women's 3,000 steeplechase at the Gary Wieneke Invitational in Champaign, Ill., on Friday. The Illinois State sophomore ran 10:29.51 for the ninth-fastest time in program history and won by nearly 30 seconds over Illinois' Maggie Gamboa.

Teammate and former Valley High standout Lauren Schulze finished runner-up in the women's 5,000. The Redbirds redshirt freshman ran 17:45.33 to trail only teammate Claire Fuhlhage's 17:30.45.

At the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., true Razorbacks freshman Ainsley Erzen finished fifth in a competitive women's 800 meters. The former Carlisle star ran a personal-best 2:08.20. The winner was Saint Vincent's Shafiqua Maloney in a new meet record 2:03.20.

Northern Iowa shifted gears when the Musco Twilight in Iowa City on Friday was cancelled and competed at Augustana's Meet of Champions on Friday at the Austin E. Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex in Rock Island, Ill. Former Monticello prep Paige Holub captured her first collegiate win in two years in the women's 1,500 after running 4:38.20. Holub is a Panther senior. Sophomore teammate Ella Popenhagen, a former Cedar Rapids Kennedy prep, ran 4:41.88 for fourth place.

Loras senior Wyatt Kelly ran a career-best 1:52.68 to nearly capture the win in the 800. The former Hudson prep was beaten to the line by Millikin's Jake Shumaker by .08 of a second. Northern Iowa sophomore Chase Noche sophomore Knoche was third in 1:52.96. He is a former Calamus-Wheatland runner. Junior teammate Drake Hanson, a former Southeast Polk prep, was next in 1:53.07, with Loras sophomore Ryan Harvey fifth in 1:53.74.

Moving to a meet at Emporia State in Kansas on Sunday, where Iowa Central sophomore Taylor McCreedy clinched a spot at NJCAA nationals by placing fourth in the 1,500 meters in 4:45.13. The former Atlantic High prep ran the 10th-best time in Tritons history. She was 10.01 seconds behind winner Alyssa Armendariz of St. Mary (Kan.).

South Dakota's home meet in Vermillion from Saturday was delayed to Monday because of bad weather. Dordt University showed up to gain a few 'A' standards for NAIA nationals. Senior Peter Shippy captured the 3,000 steeplechase victory in 9:08.74, a time that moves the former Sioux Center prep to second best nationally. Shippy had run an 'A' standard of 9:21.35 earlier this season. Senior Thaniel Schroeder was runner-up in a new best of 9:13.07 that ranks him third in the nation.

Dordt's Emilee Heynen, a former Western Christian (Hull) athlete from Sioux Center, won the 800 in 2:14.08. The sophomore gained the 'A' standard with her time and owns the 10th-best clocking in the NAIA. Senior teammate Mike Kooistra narrowly missed the 'A' standard after running 2:14.52 and finishing third.

Former Morningside College runner Garret Ehlers won the 5,000. Ehlers, 31, of Sioux City ran 14:49.65 to win by more than 14 seconds.

Shifting to triathlon and The Americas Championship, part of the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas in The Woodlands, Texas, on Saturday. Three-time Texas winner Matt Hanson, a former Buena Vista University athlete and professor, was 10th out of the water and trying to gain on the leaders when he suffered a crash. Hanson said on his YouTube channel that an age-group athlete in front of him crashed in front of him and Hanson had nowhere to go. He tumbled over the handlebars and fell flat on his back. Hanson said he was fine, though his helmet was cracked on the inside. The resident of Castle Rock, Colo., didn't finish.

Finishing in the women's professional competition was Jess Smith of Clive. Smith was 12th among the women and 70th overall in 9:28:31 for the 3.8K swim, 180K bike and 42.2K run. The winner was Great Britain's Kat Matthews in 8:32:52.
