Mid-Valley high school football: 5 takeaways from Week 4

The high school football season continued this week with teams approaching the midway point of the season.

There are five more weeks left in the regular season, and some big Mid-Valley matchups coming up.

Here are five key takeaways from the fourth week of high school football in the Mid-Valley.

1: West Salem, South Salem both win ahead of next week’s matchup

Evan Wusstig scored four touchdowns as West Salem beat Grants Pass 49-14 on Thursday for the Titans’ first win of the season.

West Salem improves to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Special District 1 with the victory.

The Titans next play at 7:15 p.m. Friday at South Salem.

“The win means a lot, but definitely not satisfied yet,” Wusstig said. “Our team has a ton of potential, and we plan to keep the momentum and beat South next week.”

South Salem beat South Medford 45-21 on Friday.

With the victory, the Saxons are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the league this season.

2: North Salem suffers first loss of the season

North Salem had its first setback of the season Friday with a 56-21 loss to North Medford.

In the loss, Jamahl Wilson scored three touchdowns for the Vikings, including a 99-yard run and big kickoff return.

The Vikings fall to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Special District 1.

North Salem next will host McNary at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

3: McKay improves to 3-1 this season

McKay beat Woodburn 35-0 on Friday to keep their hot start to the season going.

The Scots are now 3-1 overall and in the Mid-Willamette Conference.

McKay next will host Crescent Valley at 7 p.m. Thursday.

4: Sprague earns first win of the season at Roseburg

Sprague got its first win of the season Friday with a 40-36 victory over Roseburg.

Kenya Johnson scored four touchdowns for the Olympians in the victory.

With the win, Sprague improves to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Special District 1.

It’s the first victory of the AJ Robinson era for the Olys.

Sprague next hosts South Medford at 7 p.m. Thursday.

5: Silverton, Kennedy stay unbeaten this season

The Silverton-Mt. Angel area is having another great football season.

Silverton beat South Albany 42-0 to improve to 4-0 overall and in the Mid-Willamette Conference.

The Foxes also have wins against Dallas, Woodburn and Central.

Silverton next will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Corvallis.

The Foxes entered the Week at No. 5 in the OSAA rankings for Class 5A.

Kennedy beat Warrenton 42-0 on Friday to improve to 4-0.

The Trojans also have wins against Stanfield, Siuslaw and Yamhill-Carlton.

Kennedy next will host Sisters at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Trojans entered the week No. 1 in 3A.
