Mid-Valley high school football: 5 takeaways from Week 2

The high school football season continued statewide this week, with teams looking to make adjustments after their opening games of the season.

There are seven more weeks left in the regular season, and some conferences haven’t started league play yet, while others have.

Here are five key takeaways from the second week of football in the Mid-Valley.

1: Dallas bounces back from season-opening loss to beat McKay

Zayvian Webster rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns Friday to give Dallas a 36-18 win at McKay.

The victory comes after last week’s season-opening loss at Silverton.

They will host Lebanon at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 in their home opener.

Dallas' Chase Eriksen (16) and Isaiah Mosley (14) wait for the game against McKay to begin.

With the loss, McKay falls to 1-1. They opened the season last week with a win at Lebanon.

“Didn’t put our best foot forward today. Thought we didn’t align and assign well and didn’t execute enough when it counted,” McKay coach Brandis Piper said. “Definitely some stuff for us to clean up and make adjustments moving forward.”

The Scots next will host South Albany at 7 p.m. Sept. 15.

McKay’s Dynavian Berry (15) catches a pass from Kyrin Fuimaono (0) during the second half of the game against Dallas.

2: Athan Palmateer’s big game rallies South Salem to victory

South Salem quarterback Athan Palmateer connected with Esteban Mendez in the final minutes to give the Saxons a 45-44 victory over Sunset.

In the game, Palmateer had six touchdown passes, including four to Mendez.

“Was just another day in the office,” Mendez said.

South Salem is now 2-0 this season, and they’ve won 10 of their past 11 regular season games dating to last season.

The Saxons will continue to be on the road the next two weeks — Sept. 15 at Grants Pass, and Sept. 22 at South Medford.

South Salem returns home Sept. 29 against West Salem.

3: North Salem remains unbeaten

North Salem made quick work of David Douglas on Friday, winning 55-0 at home.

Vikings quarterback TC Manumaleuna threw three touchdown passes, two of which were to Pierce Walker.

North Salem running back Jamahl Wilson had three touchdowns — a rushing touchdown, a pick-6 and a punt return touchdown.

The Vikings are 2-0 this season after two home victories.

“Just good game planning and balling out like how we have been,” Walker said. “We just got to keep performing as we’re supposed to.”

North Salem next will play at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at Roseburg.

4: West Salem falls to 0-2 this season

West Salem fell to 0-2 this season with a 42-20 loss to Lake Oswego Friday night.

The Titans next will play at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at North Medford, before returning home Sept. 21 against Grants Pass.

After the North Medford game, West Salem will have straight games in the Salem-Keizer area, before ending the regular season Oct. 27 at Sheldon.

5: Silverton wins big again

Silverton’s football team cruised past Woodburn 44-7 Friday to improve to 2-0 this season.

The Foxes have outscored their opponents 78-14 in the two games.

Silverton next will host Central at 7 p.m. Sept. 15.

Woodburn falls to 0-2 with the setback.

The Bulldogs next will play at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at West Albany.
