Michigan State vs. Maryland final score, highlights: Mistakes sink Spartans vs. Maryland

After a game last week in which Michigan State played against a Washington team that was, simply put, better than it was, Saturday's 31-9 loss at the hands of Maryland is sure to be more maddening for Spartan fans.

Michigan State was able to put together several long drives over the course of the game, but nearly every time that happened, it ended in a drive-killing turnover. Michigan State had two drives of 12 or more plays come up empty, once in the first quarter when a turnover on downs gave Maryland the ball back and once in the fourth when an airmailed screen pass ended in a Terrapin interception.

Mistakes were the story of the game for Michigan State, along with Maryland capitalizing on those mistakes. The Spartans finished the game with six penalties for 70 yards and five total turnovers.

Taulia Tagovailoa was solid for Maryland, going 21 for 36 passing for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Though Maryland didn't run the ball especially often, it ran well when it elected to. The Maryland defense, however, ultimately stole the show.

Noah Kim, who was pulled in the fourth quarter after a leg cramp, finished the day 18-for-33 for 190 yards and a touchdown. Houser was 6-for-10 for 74 yards in his series, and Sam Leavitt took the field for the last series.

It's the second week in a row Michigan State has found itself on the wrong end of a lopsided loss. Next week, it will play Iowa, No. 22 heading into this week. Harlon Barnett is going to have some personnel questions moving forward. Montorie Foster Jr. and Nathan Carter have been bright spots in the Spartan offense. But quarterback is going to remain a big question mark moving forward.

Michigan State vs. Maryland updates, highlights

All times Eastern.

Final: Maryland 31, Michigan State 9

6:56 p.m. -- Michigan State after three plays lets the clock god own and Leavitt runs a play as time expires to end the game. Kind of an odd sequence but that sums up how this game has gone.

6:53 p.m. -- Sam Leavitt now comes in the game for Michigan State as the third QB the Spartans have had.

Touchdown Maryland: Maryland 31, Michigan State 9

6:49 p.m. -- Maryland's fourth-down play turns into a touchdown to Octavian Smith Jr. That will extinguish any hope of an MSU comeback, though there's an argument to be made those hopes were extinguished a while ago.

6:46 p.m. -- Tagovailoa gave himself early on a third-down run, forcing Maryland to go for it on fourth down rather than getting a fresh set of downs. A timeout is taken ahead of this fourth-and-1.

6:39 p.m. -- After Tagovailoa took off down the sideline, Malik Spencer is going to get hit with targeting upon hitting Tagovailoa with the crown of the helmet. Michigan State's defense has put together a strong showing to this point, but it looks like frustration boiled over here.

6:33 p.m. -- That looks like it might be a dagger. A good drive from Houser, as so many drives have been, is cut short by a turnover. Tarheeb Still gets the interception and brings it deep into MSU territory. As some small solace, Still stepped out of bounds on the return. But it's just the latest in a long series of mistakes by MSU in this game.

6:28 p.m. -- Houser has the Michigan State offense chugging right now. On the first set of downs it went to fourth-and-2 and MSU converted. Michigan State is now in Maryland territory.

Field Goal Maryland: Maryland 24, Michigan State 9

6:21 p.m. -- Following that field goal, Katin Houser takes the field for the second week in a row. Kim went 18-for-33 for 191 yards, a touchdown, and two picks. Houser immediately takes a flea flicker or the Spartans and throws it short of Foster.

6:18 p.m. -- After three plays, Maryland settles for a field goal. Following the failed two-point conversion, that makes it a 15-point game.

6:16 p.m. -- The broadcast reports Kim is OK after some cramping in his leg.

6:12 p.m. -- No sooner does that update go through than MSU goes three-and-out again featuring a sack of Kim that resulted in a fumble and fourth-and-20. Kim limped off the field. A horrendous punt will give Maryland the ball back in MSU territory.

6:09 p.m. -- The Spartan defense is willing Michigan State to stay in this game. Hazelton brings more pressure and Tatum nearly had a pick. On the punt Maryland kicks it at the goal line for a touchback.

End of third quarter: Maryland 21, Michigan State 9

6 p.m. -- Kim had Foster WIDE open down the sideline and just overthrew him. If he hits Foster in stride that might be six, but as it is, MSU is forced to punt after a three-and-out. Golden opportunity for the Spartans comes up short.

5:57 p.m. -- Now the defense forces a three-and-out. Really nice blitz dialed up Scottie Hazelton on third down forces an errant throw from Tagovailoa. Maryland punts it away to its own 18-yard line.

Touchdown Michigan State: Maryland 21, Michigan State 9

5:53 p.m. -- Two plays later, Kim finds Tyrell Henry in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. The two-point try is no good on a fade. Really nice route and play on the touchdown, and it's now a 12-point game in East Lansing.

5:52 p.m. -- Mosley walks off. Next play Carter bursts up the middle down to the Maryland 10-yard line. Nice run there, and if Michigan State scores we're talking about a ballgame.

5:50 p.m. -- A potentially brutal injury for Michigan State here, as Tre Mosley gets hurt after that last play. That's not an injury Michigan State can afford.

5:39 p.m. -- Michigan State finally makes a play backed up against its own end zone. Tagovailoa tried to force it to Fulton, and Gross makes a juggling interception. The Spartans defense bails out the offense from a third touchdown off a turnover, and MSU's offense retakes the field.

5:35 p.m. -- Carter starts on the right foot with a nice 12-yard run but on the very next play Kim gets picked off on a naked boot. Yet another turnover by Michigan State.

5:30 p.m. -- Michigan State allowed the drive to continue the worst way possible: Simply lost discipline on a punt and allowed the punter to take off. No harm no foul as Maryland missed a field goal attempt. But those kinds of plays are the most frustrating.

5:25 p.m. -- Good news for Maryland: Tagovailoa is back on the field to start the third. The Terrapins start with the ball at the 25-yard line.

Halftime: Maryland 21, Michigan State 3

5:06 p.m. -- As opposed to last week when MSU was just very clearly overmatched by Washington, this week has featured some brutal mistakes from MSU in key scenarios. Two turnovers, some drive-killing penalties, and dropped passes continue to hurt the Spartans. Tagovailoa's status will be important, as Maryland needs him healthy. He went into the medical tent toward the end of the half after completing 11 of 16 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

5:02 p.m. -- Adding insult to injury, Maryland blocks the kick and we go to the half.

5 p.m. -- MSU now lines up for a field goal trying to make it a 15-point game before the half.

4:58 p.m. -- Really weird choice from MSU pays off. They go for it on fourth-and-18 and a fortunate facemask lets the Spartans keep the ball. They're now at the Maryland 29-yard line with nine seconds left. Kim then finds Foster for a would-be touchdown but Foster can't come up with the grab. Great idea from Michigan State.

4:55 p.m. -- Foster made a nice scoop to get the Spartans to their own 48-yard line. Kim rolls out on the next play and hits Glover on the sideline.

4:50 p.m. -- Tagovailoa went into the medical tent. Maryland punts, and the Spartans will try to score with 1:35 in the half.

4:47 p.m. -- Michigan State forced a three-and-out on this series, with Taovailoa being dragged out by Dillon Tatum. Tagovailoa appears to have suffered an injury on the play.

Field Goal Michigan State: Maryland 21, Michigan State 3

4:39 p.m. -- Maryland brought pressure on third-and-9 and and Kim was unable to banana on his roll-out. He skipped one in and MSU kicks a field goal. The kick was good but flags went flying. The penalty is on Maryland for running into the kicker, which MSU declines.

4:38 p.m. -- There's no denying the impact of that fumble, but Carter is running hard. He's at 13 carries for 51 grindy yards. Just one major mistake so far in this one for him.

4:33 p.m. -- Big play here for MSU, as Kim finds Foster for a big gain and Maryland gets hit with pass interference on a double move on the next play. MSU has moved the ball fairly well at times, but has not been able to close its drives.

Touchdown Maryland: Maryland 21, Michigan State 0

4:26 p.m. -- Maryland is knocking on the door once again following that Carter fumble, and both teams are playing with a lot of tempo right now. Michigan State was hit by an offside call and an illegal substitution on the same play, but it ended in a Maryland touchdown anyways. This team continues to look discombobulated.

4:21 p.m. -- What would have been an important series for the Spartans immediately ends with a Carter fumble recovered by Donnell Brown. Bad goes to worse for MSU.

Touchdown Maryland: Maryland 14, Michigan State 0

4:13 p.m. -- Tough break for the Spartans. They had put Maryland into third-and-6 but Tagovailoa finds Tyrese Chambers in the end zone with a perfect throw and catch. Maryland goes up by two scores.

4:11 p.m. -- Maryland working out of the pistol gives McDonald space to break a big run. Next play he shows his strength and drives forward, and Maryland is inside the Spartan red zone.

4:08 p.m. -- Despite being backed up to start this drive, the Terrapins are driving. They're now approaching midfield behind Tagovailoa's steady arm and legs. Not a lot of chunk plays from the Terrapins but just a really methodical-looking offense.

End of first quarter: Maryland 7, Michigan State 0

4:02 p.m. -- The quarter ends on a Hemby run.

3:58 p.m. -- Some gutty plays from MSU. First it was a TE screen in the middle of the field to make it second and manageable. Then it was a Jordon Simmons run. Then a Noah Kim dash invigorated Barnett to go for it on fourth down. Carter, however, got stacked up on the line and Michigan State turns it over on downs with eight seconds left in the quarter. Tough way for that drive to end.

3:56 p.m. -- This is what you want to see if you're the Spartans. They're going up-tempo and Nathan Carer had a few nice carries. A perfectly-executed screen to Montorie Foster Jr. has them in striking distance, but a penalty is going to make this a tougher red zone trip.

3:53 p.m. -- Michigan State showing a bit of life. After getting into third-and-20, Kim complete an 18-yard pass and The Spartans convert on fourth-and-2. Sometimes going for it off emotion isn't the worst idea.

Touchdown Maryland: Maryland 7, Michigan State 0

3:45 p.m. -- Felton was ruled short, but Maryland scores on the very next play with a nifty play action trap. Nice finish there for Maryland, and the Terps take an early lead.

3:43 p.m. -- Tagovailoa is very calm and collected in this one. He hits Tai Felton on a slant and Felton rolled into the end zone. He was marked down at the 2-yard line but is adamant his knee never hit. The play is under review.

3:42 p.m. -- Chance Rucker makes a great play in the end zone to break up what would have been a touchdown pass. Really strong defensive play by the DB.

3:40 p.m. -- Maryland converts a third-and-2 with Antwain Littleton powering through. Maryland's offense appears to want to keep the game slow.

3:39 p.m. -- A promising drive for the Spartans that featured a beautiful completion from Kim on third-and-11 ends abruptly with a bad throw into the middle of the field that gets picked off. Brutal mistake and Tagovailoa and the Terps take over around midfield.

3:33 p.m. -- Maryland has deferred its decision until the second half, and will kick to MSU to start the game. Michigan State will start at the 25-yard line after a fair catch, and Noah Kim takes the field.

3:08 p.m. -- Kind of visible here: Maryland's "Terps" script helmets, displayed by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.

3:05 p.m. -- Michigan State made a statement upon its entrance.

3 p.m. -- Welcome to Michigan State vs. Maryland! The Spartans are looking to bounce back from an overwhelming loss against Washington against the 3-0 Terrapins as they open up Big Ten play.
