Michigan State hockey drops series opener at Notre Dame, 4-1

The No. 8 Michigan State hockey team dropped its first of two games on the road against Notre Dame on Friday night, allowing three third-period goals in a 4-1 loss in South Bend, Indiana.

Notre Dame defenseman Drew Bavaro broke a 1-1 tie with just under eight minutes remaining off a one-timer that got past MSU goaltender Trey Augustine. Freshman forward Cole Knuble scored on a breakaway with 4:32 remaining to extend the Irish's lead before forward Trevor Janicke added a late empty-net goal.

After a scoreless draw in the first 20 minutes, MSU got the game's first goal in the second period when sophomore forward Isaac Howard whistled a one-timer off the crossbar and in past Notre Dame goaltender Ryan Bischel. MSU forward Karsen Dorwart won a face-off in the Irish zone on the power play to set up Howard's seventh goal of the season.

Just 26 seconds later, Notre Dame defenseman Ryan Siedem swatted at a loose puck in the slot that found its way through a pile in front of the net and through Augustine's legs to level it back up.

Augustine finished with 27 saves, while Bischel stopped 30 MSU shots, including all 12 in the third period.

MSU and Notre Dame will meet again Saturday, with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be streamed on the Peacock app.
