Michigan football's Joey Velazquez, Cameron Calhoun enter transfer portal

LOS ANGELES — The Michigan football roster is now two spots lighter.

Freshman defensive back Cameron Calhoun and graduate linebacker Joey Velazquez both entered the transfer portal on Thursday, a program spokesman confirmed to the Free Press.

The news came just a few hours after select members of the defense and its coordinator Jesse Minter previewed Monday's Rose Bowl matchup against No. 4 Alabama.

Velazquez, a Columbus, Ohio native, also played baseball for U-M. The 6-foot, 222-pounder recorded seven tackles in five seasons and recovered one fumble on special teams against Wisconsin in 2021.

Now a graduate student, Velazquez hit .255 (70-for-275) for the baseball team with nine home runs and a .340 OBP. The outfielder and left-handed hitter helped the Wolverines win the Big Ten tournament in 2022 and advanced to a pair of NCAA regionals in 2021-22.

He won four Big Ten championship and earned seven varsity letters at U-M.

Calhoun played 13 snaps on defense this season, seeing action on defense against UNLV and playing special teams against Bowling Green.

Calhoun was a four-star prospect out of Cincinnati Winston Woods, rated the No. 396 overall prospect and No. 41 defensive back in the nation per 247Sports Composite rankings for the class of 2023.

He was an early enrollee at this time last season, when he was one off nine freshmen to join the Wolverines at Fiesta Bowl practice. This season, 10 freshmen enrolled early and eight made the trip to L.A.

In total, four Wolverines have entered their name into the transfer portal. Running backs CJ Stokes and Leon Franklin both announced their intention to explore other options earlier this month.
