Michigan athletics set to begin alcohol sales at Crisler Center, Yost Ice Arena

The University of Michigan Athletics Department has been approved for state liquor licenses and beginning this weekend will offer the sale of alcohol at events in Crisler Center and Yost Arena, the school announced Thursday.

The Board of Regents approved alcohol sales and asked the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to issue liquor licenses at several athletic venues last October. The first official event where alcohol will be available for purchase is Friday night's wrestling meet on Feb. 2 vs. Iowa (8:30 p.m.).

The first men's basketball game that will have alcohol sales is Saturday, Feb. 3 vs. Rutgers (4 p.m.) and the first ice hockey game will be the following Friday, Feb. 9 vs. rival Michigan State (7 p.m.).

The statement released Thursday said in order to "ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all fans" anybody purchasing alcohol will be required to show ID each time, and each customer will be limited to two alcoholic beverages per person.

The press release also states that based on how the rollout and implementation of alcohol sales go at both Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena the rest of the winter and into the spring, there will be a determination for potential sales at Michigan Stadium, after a data review.

Also according to the release, there was an "expanded implementation at Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena of U-M's Weapons Detection Systems" on Jan. 4 which has allowed "U-M to expand its extensive security measures throughout its venues."
