Biggersville wins first MHSAA football title with seconds remaining in Class 1A final

OXFORD — The Mississippi high school football state championships kick off Thursday afternoon in Oxford, starting Velma Jackson (13-1) and Biggersville (12-1) in the MHSAA Class 1A title game.

With one final drive, Biggersville made it count.

A botched punt gave Biggersville the ball at Velma's 28-yard line and the opportunity wasn't missed. A six-play drive was capped by Trezhonn Gunn's 2-yard TD in the final seconds to bring Biggersville its first Class 1A state title.

Gunn scores on a 2-yard rush for Biggersville. Evading some tackles Gunn, muscles in for his fourth total touchdown.

A 3-yard pass to Zialis Blackmon from Rowsey after Rowsey scrambled to his left faked that he was heading toward the end zone and slotted it to Blackmon. Rowsey has his sixth passing touchdown of the night.

Griffin scores his sixth touchdown of the game with a 37-yard rushing touchdown. A 2-point conversion is good to extend Velma Jackson's lead to nine points with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

Gunn scores on a 52-yard score from a pass from Rowsey on a slant route. Biggersville attempts a 2-point conversion to take the lead, but it fails and Velma Jackson receives the ball with the lead marinated.

Griffin scores on a 4-yard rush after a 60-yard run on the previous play. His fifth on the night. Velma Jackson scores on its 2-point conversion but is called back due to an illegal shift penalty. Biggersville stops Velma on its second attempt.

Gunn, with a shovel pitch from Rowsey, scores on a 4-yard rush. Velma Jackson blocks the point-after attempt to keep hold of its now one-point lead.

Gavin Griffin scores on a 33-yard touchdown run to the right side — flys by defenders for his fourth touchdown of the night. Velma holds Biggersville on its opening drives and scores off it. Velma's 2-pt conversion, scored by Tyshun Willis, gives the lead back to Velma.

Halftime: Biggersville 28, Velma Jackson 27

The drive stemmed from a Griffin fumble. The score came from another slant route, this time resulting in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Rowsey to Aron Taylor. Five seconds remained before the half ended, with Biggersville receiving the ball to start the third quarter.

A 64-yard pass to Seago from Rowsey on the first play from scrimmage on another slant route. This is Biggersville's second score on its first play of a scoring drive.

Griffin scores his third rushing touchdown after a 1-yard score, hurdling the pile. 2:47 left in the half. A failed 2-point try form the 8-yard line after a false start penalty.

Velma Jackson 21, Biggersville 14, 2Q 4:32

A 6-yard slant touchdown to Brooks Seago from Rousey puts Biggersville back to one score. A few tackles from on the scoring drive loss from Velma Jackson, but Biggersville finds the endzone. 4:32 left in the first half.

Jathan Hatch injured

After a run play, Hatch broke free and ran for a first down with some daylight but pulled up and ran out of bounds when close to the sideline. Clutching what seems to be his right leg, he is now steadily walking up and down the Biggersville side line. Hatch is the Lions leading rusher and a Louisville commit.

Griffin had his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon. A 5-yard score. Velma is successful on its 2-point conversion on a rush from Griffin.

Gavin Griffin muscles his way into score on a 5-yard score. Multiple touches for Griffin thus far. A missed extra point by Cornell Bacon.

Vemla Jackson 7, Biggersville 7, 1Q 9:07

A 76-yard slant route to Trezhonn Gunn from quarterback Drew Rowsey, Gunn goes untouched on Biggersville's first play from scrimmage.

Velma Jackson 7, Biggersville 0, 1Q 9:18

A 33-yard touchdown pass from Terrelle Smith to Tyshun Willis to score on Velma Jackson's first opening drive.
