Meyers often makes quick work of opponents for Port Clinton

Port Clinton’s Dagan Meyers has 24 pins among 32 victories this season.

Meyers (32-7) was pinned at 1:46 by top-seed Adam West of Perkins in the finals Saturday at 215 pounds at the Sandusky Bay Conference tourney. Two-seed Meyers beat West once in three tries this season and they won’t cross paths again.

Meyers hopes to qualify to state for the first time. He lost to a state placer at district last season.

He was a district alternate as a sophomore and sixth at sectional as a freshman.

“My attitude and my will to win, I’m a senior so it’s my last year,” he said. “My confidence before a match. My endurance. I take every match one by one and I try to win every one. My goal is obviously to make it to state, and place.

“I want some of the guys in the wrestling room with me.”

Joshua Cornell (120) earned a 16-2 major decision over Edison's Quentin Cox for an SBC championship. Gavin Cornell (132) fell 4-1 to Lakota's Lane Thacker in the finals as Port Clinton was sixth.

“He’s putting in a lot of work to earn that for himself,” Meyers said of Josh. “He’s a silent captain, but he pushes people to be better. [He and Gavin] are practice partners. They get it done in the room. They earn it and they deserve it.”

Meyers beat three kids ranked in the state to finish first at Marion Harding. He was unseeded.

“Winning any tournament is a great feeling,” he said.

He notched pins in 26 seconds, 15 seconds, 11 seconds, 27 seconds and 2:40 to finish first at the Caleb Stockmaster Memorial at Margaretta.

“That was a highlight,” he said. “There were tough schools there. The more energy you can save for the finals, the better.”

He frequently hits a double-leg, followed by a pin. He’s a ball of energy until time runs out.

He trains with Taylor Schierberg and Reilly Laird (190), who finished fifth in the SBC.

“Taylor pushes me to get my work in,” Meyers said. “He makes sure I get solid work in every day.”

That’s basically Meyers’ favorite thing about wrestling. He’s running out of time with his friends.

Meyers moved to Port Clinton when he was nearly 14, the summer before his eighth-grade year.

“In a smaller community, everyone knows everyone and wants everyone to do well,” he said. “My coaches and my parents are close friends. The standard is high for both.”
