The Mets have had discussions with president of baseball operations candidate David Stearns, SNY’s MLB Insider Andy Martino has confirmed.

As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Tuesday night, Stearns’ contract with the Milwaukee Brewers enabled him to start talking to other clubs after the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

Martino adds that talks have progressed further along than New York had gotten in the past with Theo Epstein, but the hiring is no sure thing. Stearns has also had discussions with the Astros and he could talk to other teams throughout the month.

The 38-year-old stepped down from his role as Brewers president of baseball operations following the 2022 season. It’s unknown if Stearns is open to returning to a leadership position with a big-league club, though Rosenthal has heard the New York City native is "re-energized" after taking on more of an advisory role.

Stearns has long been rumored as one of Steve Cohen's top targets for the opening with the team he grew up rooting for.

New York, of course, parted ways with a few high-ranking front office officials just last week, which could represent the first collaboration between GM Billy Eppler and an incoming president of baseball operations like Stearns.

Eppler will remain Mets general manager no matter what happens with Stearns.
