Mets sign former Yankees first baseman Luke Voit to minor league deal
The Mets have signed first baseman Luke Voit to a minor league contract.
He will report to Triple-A Syracuse and be active on Tuesday.
Voit, 32, was designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers after 22 games with the club this season and was later released. He slashed .221/.284/.265 with the Brew Crew with no home runs and four RBI.
Voit is a seven-year veteran with stops playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Yankees, San Diego Padres, Washington Nationals, and the Brewers. With 95 career home runs, Voit saw his best season come in the Covid-shortened 2020 campaign, when he led the American League with 22 homers in just 56 games with the Bombers.
If Voit makes his way up to the Mets’ major league roster, it could spell trouble for either Mark Vientos or Daniel Vogelbach, since Voit figures to primarily be a DH option at this point.
But with Pete Alonso expected to be out 3-4 weeks because of his wrist injury, Voit could be a fill-in option at first base.
