Mets send Tommy Pham to Diamondbacks minutes before MLB trade deadline, reports say

New York Mets designated hitter Tommy Pham (28) celebrates after hitting a two run home run in the fifth inning on June 18, 2023, against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field.

KANSAS CITY — The void in the Mets' outfield grew larger on Tuesday night.

According to multiple reports, the Mets traded Tommy Pham to the Diamondbacks in exchange for 17-year-old outfield prospect Jeremy Rodriguez. The New York Post's Joel Sherman was the first to report the deal.

On a one-year, $6 million deal that he signed in the offseason, Pham was clear target for a contending team this season.

The 35-year-old outfielder had been one of the most productive offensive forces for the Mets in 2023. Pham's .820 OPS led the team while he also supplied 10 home runs, 36 RBI, 29 runs and 11 stolen bases.

Justin Jarvis: What to know about pitcher the Mets received for Mark Canha

Pham, who recently missed some time with groin tightness, had supplanted Mark Canha as the team's starting left fielder through his strong offensive play. The Mets traded Canha to the Brewers for pitching prospect Justin Jarvis on Monday night.

With Pham and Canha now gone, the Mets will likely turn to Jeff McNeil to play a larger role in one of the corner outfield spots. They will also hope that Starling Marte, who has been out since July 20 with migraines, can return to form.

DJ Stewart is another option to fill an outfield spot for the Mets. The Mets also called up Rafael Ortega on Tuesday, and the 32-year-old journeyman was slotted in at center field with Brandon Nimmo as a late scratch.

Rodriguez, a native of Esperanza, Dominican Republic, was signed to minor league deal by the Diamondbacks in January. He has played 36 games in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .250 with a .751 OPS, including two home runs, 18 RBI, 24 runs and 12 stolen bases.
