Mets' sale continues: Mark Canha trade to Brewers brings back pitcher Justin Jarvis

With the MLB trade deadline less than 24 hours away, the Mets continued to sell off assets.

On Monday night, the Mets traded outfielder Mark Canha to the Brewers for right-handed pitcher Justin Jarvis, who is pitching in Triple-A The move comes after the Mets sent shockwaves through the league by trading Max Scherzer to the Rangers. David Robertson was also dealt to the Marlins last week.

Canha, 34, was hitting .245 with six home runs, 29 RBI, a .343 on-base percentage and .725 OPS in his second season in Queens. He is in the final year of his two-year, $26.5 million contract which includes an $11.5 million club option for 2024 with a $2 million buyout.

The 23-year-old Jarvis had just been promoted from Double-A Biloxi to Triple-A Nashville in early July. In 14 starts with Biloxi, the Brewers' 30th-ranked prospect was 6-4 with a 3.33 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 75⅔ innings.

He has made three starts for Nashville, going 0-2 with 14 earned runs in 11⅔ innings with 11 strikeouts.

Jarvis leapt into the Mets' 13th spot in their prospect rankings, according to MLB Pipeline. Already at the deadline, the Mets have acquired their No. 2 prospect, shortstop Luisangel Acuña; No. 6 prospect, shortstop Marco Vargas; and No. 19 prospect, catcher Ronald Hernandez, in two deals that sent out Max Scherzer and David Robertson.

The Mets, who entered this season with the highest payroll in MLB history, currently sit at 50-55 and 6.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
