Mets-Phillies pettiness over Rhys Hoskins spills into their Triple-A teams

Even with one of its primary instigator currently in the minors, the beef between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies is still going strong.

A week after Rhys Hoskins took Jacob Rhame deep and vengefully slow-walked his home run trot to avenge a fastball from Rhame thrown at his head the night before, Philadelphia’s Triple-A affiliate, Lehigh Valley IronPigs, faced the Syracuse Mets.

In the Mets’ bullpen was Rhame, who had been optioned days after the incident. Whoever controlled the IronPigs’ scoreboard decided to have a little fun with that.

Even the Phillies’ Triple-A team is mocking Jacob Rhame

As Rhame entered the game in the sixth inning Monday, the reliever was greeted by a replay of Hoskins’ homer and lengthy trot around the bases on the Lehigh Valley scoreboard, according to Syracuse.com.

According to the report, Syracuse did not take the gesture well.

Mets manager Tony DeFrancesco reportedly gave IronPigs general manager Kurt Landes “an earful” after the game, with Landes apologizing and saying he was unaware of plans to show the video. Mets hitting coach Joel Chimelis reportedly said that somebody needed to be held accountable for video. The Triple-A Mets players reportedly blasted DMX’s “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” on a portable speaker, with one MLB veteran calling the video disrespectful:

“They didn’t respect (us), not only the pitcher, they don’t respect us as a team," Mets outfielder Carlos Gomez said after Monday’s game. "They should not have played that video. We’re all professionals here.

“It’s good we beat them, so they can feel (us).”

Of course, the Mets’ most effective response was their on-field play, as the team has outscored the IronPigs 22-5 since the video was played. A four-run comeback followed Rhame’s entrance on Monday, and the Mets notched a blowout 18-5 win on Tuesday.

Lehigh Valley has responded by ... continuing to mock their opponent, focusing on the team’s most famous player Tuesday.

Sadly, the Phillies and Mets’ Double-A teams don’t meet until July 15.
