MetroWest Daily News wins national honors from APSE for sports coverage

Tim Dumas and Kyle Grabowski, a pair of journalists who cover sports in MetroWest for the USA TODAY Network, took home a pair of national honors for their work in 2023 by the Associated Press Sports Editors.

Dumas, a MetroWest and Milford Daily News sports writer, placed in the D Division in the Long Feature category for his story on Wellesley High School senior Lily Kahrl. Kahrl is a Wellesley High School senior and member of the Raiders' swim team who has a rare (fewer than 1,000 cases worldwide) genetic disorder called STXBP1 encephalopathy.

"Being inclusive doesn’t take a monumental approach in the way you approach things,” Wellesley High swim coach Doug Curtin told Dumas.

“It’s hard to be negative on the pool deck,” senior Isabel McKay said, “when you watch someone as positive as Lily walk in and be happy every single day to show up and do this work.”

Grabowski, who joined MetroWest and Milford in August after working at the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, placed in the D Division in the Short Feature category for his story on Algonquin Regional High School field hockey phenom Lindsey Brown. Brown ranks among the top 50 field hockey recruits in the Class of 2025 according to Maxfieldhockey.com and committed to Northwestern, the current No. 2 team in the country and the 2021 national champions.

"That's the thing, yes, her skills and where her field hockey game play is, but you've got to look at the amazing person she is," Algonquin field hockey coach Dan Welty told Grabowski. "She's an amazingly fun and personal person. That's something that shines through."
