Men’s title match on tap today: Men’s singles in 90th NJ Tournament will crown last of 22 champs
LEXINGTON – Champions have been decided in 21 divisions in the 90th News Journal Tennis Tournament, with the biggie yet to come today at Lakewood Racquet Club.
Will Calhoun, one-half of the nation’s No. 1 50-and-over doubles team with Jay Harris, will meet Justin Csepe, a teaching pro at Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster, at 3 p.m. in a men’s singles semifinal, with the winner advancing to the 6 p.m. finals against Lexington High School senior Ethan Remy, the reigning Ohio Cardinal Conference Player of the Year, beat Lex teammate Dylan Catanese 6-2, 6-4 in the semis. It was a rematch of the boys 18-and-under final, also won by Remy.
A couple of days later, Remy and Catanese collaborated to win the top pickleball division for the third straight year.
Calhoun, a Mansfield native who lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is playing in the NJ for the first time since 1996. He made it to today’s semis in men’s singles by beating 2009 champ Alex “Bones” McCann 7-6, 7-5 on Sunday. Later that day he and Harris played in a great men’s doubles final against cousins Ty Schaub and Jon Peters, falling 6-3, 6-3 in a match that featured some tremendous shotmaking and was much closer than the score indicated.
Today’s two matches in men’s singles will wrap up the tournament’s two week run and because of wet grounds will be played indoors at Lakewood.
