Memphis Tigers basketball recruiting: Billy Richmond III narrows list of finalists

Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway is still in the running for Billy Richmond III.

The Camden (New Jersey) wing, who is originally from Memphis, announced Wednesday he has trimmed his list of finalists from eight to four. Memphis remains a candidate to land Richmond's commitment, as do Kentucky, LSU and Alabama.

Richmond's prep career began at East High. But he has become a high-profile recruit since transferring to Camden. The versatile 6-foot-6 athlete is rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports Composite, which also lists him as the No. 31 overall recruit in the Class of 2024.

Richmond recently took an official visit to Memphis. He has also visited LSU and Kentucky. He is scheduled to visit Alabama later this month.

Last week, four-star guard and fellow Memphis native Curtis Givens III (who is close friends with Richmond) committed to LSU over offers from Memphis, Indiana, Texas and Georgia Tech.

PENNY HARDAWAY: Is recruiting locally a new problem for Memphis basketball coach? His answer may surprise you

Earlier this week, Hardaway offered his thoughts on recruiting the Memphis area during an interview with The Commercial Appeal.

“You know, usually when you grow up in Memphis, you want to play for the hometown team,” he said. “I don’t want that mystique or that feel to go away.”

The Tigers currently have one Class of 2024 commitment in Silsbee (Texas) four-star guard Jared Harris.
