Memphis Grizzlies trade David Roddy to Suns for Yuta Watanabe, Chimezie Metu, pick swap

The Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday traded forward David Roddy to the Phoenix Suns as part of a three-team trade that brought forwards Yuta Watanabe and Chimezie Metu to the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies also got a 2026 first round pick swap in the deal, which was announced on Thursday night. The Suns also acquired forward Royce O'Neale from the Brooklyn Nets as part of the trade. The deal was completed just before the trade deadline on Thursday afternoon.

The 6-foot-4 Roddy was selected by the Grizzlies with the No. 23 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. He has played a more prominent role this season as one of only a few healthy players for Memphis during the recent stretch of games.

He's averaging 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game this season and will give Phoenix depth off the bench for the stretch run.

David Roddy stats

Roddy is in his second season out of Colorado State. He's played 23.2 minutes per game this season, up from 18 last season. He averages 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for his career.

With so many Grizzlies players injured, Roddy has been a major part of the team's offense in the past few games. He's scored in double figures for the last three games.

Yuta Watanabe stats

It's a reunion for Watanabe and the Grizzlies. Watanabe began his NBA career with Memphis after he went undrafted out of George Washington in 2018. He is averaging 3.6 points per game this season for the Suns.

The 6-9 Watanabe has played for the Grizzlies, Raptors, Nets and Suns.

Chimezie Metu stats

Metu has averaged 5.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per gam in his career. He began his career with the Spurs and has also played for the Kings and Suns.

At 6-foot-10, Metu gives the Grizzlies some much-needed depth in the frontcourt for the rest of the season.

Grizzlies' trade deadline moves

The trade to send Roddy to Phoenix is the third move Grizzlies general manager Zach Kleiman has made ahead of the trade deadline. Memphis traded Steven Adams to the Houston Rockets for Victor Oladipo and three second-round picks last week, then sent Xavier Tillman Sr. to the Boston Celtics for Lamar Stevens and two second-round picks on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the Grizzlies also announced Thursday night that they'd waived Oladipo just a week after acquiring him.
