Meet Bartlesville's ASMGA new champ, plus other area golf results

Few families in Bartlesville golf history, especially at the Adams Course, have earned such high esteem as has the hammerin’ Hughes clan.

Three generations still manicure the Adams links with their precision shots.

Their cumulative achievements in local golf are voluminous. Since 1991 the Hughes crew has won the Bartlesville City Golf Championship six times — brothers Terry (1995) and Steve (2008) and Terry's son Nathan (2008, 2016, 2018, 2020).

Nathan also captured the state high school individual golf championship in 2009 and later distinguished himself in college competition. Terry, who also is a member of the Bartlesville Athletic Hall of Fame, coached Bartlesville school golf, as either a head coach or assistant in five different decades until he stepped away in the early 2020’s.

Since his boyhood days, Steve Hughes has sharpened his links skills at Adams Golf Course. Hughes recently captured the Adams Senior Men's Golf Association championship during his first year in the association.

Terry has won the Adams Course club championship multiple times and Steve earned the same title in 2021 and 2022 — and this year reigned supreme in the Adams Senior Men's Golf Association championship tourney. And, the family has recorded several other area highlights as well.

It all began with Larry Hughes.

The family patriarch introduced the sport to Steve and Terry when they were still youngsters growing up in Bartlesville. Approximately 50 years later, Larry "gets out there a couple of times a week," Steve said. "We grew up playing golf with our dad."

Steve has distinguished himself in multiple ways — the championships already mentioned above, many other impressive wins and performances, and two holes-in-one.

But his personal highlights include "playing in the Oklahoma Golf Association tournament (advancing to the semifinals) and playing in the Senior Open qualifier in Wichita. I won low amateur and they gave me a medal," he said.

Steve analyzed his best assets as a linkster.

"I hit the ball pretty straight consistently and I have a pretty good short game," he said.

"He's always had a really smooth swing and has always been a good player," Terry said. "He always stays calm on the course. ... He's my older brother and you grow up wanting to beat him."

Although a college basketball standout at Bartlesville Wesleyan College (which Terry also later attended and competed), golf has been Steve's main sports love.

"I like the challenge of it," he said. "I like the individuality of it, being responsible for your own results. If the weather is nice, a golf course is rather a good place to be."

Steve also has passed on the family legacy to his sons Mike and Tim, the former of whom is a scratch golfer.

Following are the results of the recent senior men's championship tourney and other recent local golfing competitions.
