PEORIA — The best girls soccer player in the Peoria area during the 2023 season was an athlete who is a highly-recruited NCAA Division-I player.

In basketball.

Notre Dame junior Mya Wardle headlines the 2023 Journal Star all-area girls soccer team as its player of the year. Wardle showed she is an elite two-sport athlete, following her winter campaign as Notre Dame's point guard with a return to soccer after a one-year hiatus.

An extremely speedy, high-motor intense competitor, she was a force at forward for an Irish soccer team that went deeper in the playoffs than any other in the area, stopped one match from the state finals.

Area coaches said her speed and scoring skill forced opponents to game plan specifically for her, and that defending her and keeping her from taking over a game was a real challenge. Often, those focused efforts still didn't stop her.

Overall, Notre Dame led the area with an 18-4-2 mark — winning all 18 games by shutout — and swept to a Big 12 Conference title at 10-0. In the Mid-Illini Conference, Dunlap and Morton each went 6-1 to share the league title, while Metamora was close behind at 5-1-1.

Notre Dame, Dunlap, Morton and Metamora combined for 54 wins in a Peoria area that saw fewer individual superstars, but deeper well-distributed quality talent.

In the end, Notre Dame swept through four playoff games by a combined 16-0, and beat Metamora, Dunlap and Geneseo along the way to reach the Washington Supersectional.

The run ended there with a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Lisle Benet, which went all the way to the Class 2A state title game before it was defeated by Chatham Glenwood.

Here is the Journal Star all-area team, led by Wardle.
