McCall Sims' grand slams lead Westview to first TSSAA softball state title

MURFREESBORO – McCall Sims is used to winning state championships at Westview High School.

Like many of her softball teammates, she won back-to-back state titles with the girls basketball team.

Now Sims, a sophomore pitcher for the Chargers, can add softball state champion to the list.

Sims blasted grand slams in the fourth and fifth innings Friday to propel the Chargers past Forrest 13-5 in the Class 2A championship game at Starplex, winning the first softball state title in program history.

“We got rolling, got confident and that confidence carried over from game-to-game,” Westview coach Craig Rodgers said.

Sims’ grand slams set the TSSAA state tournament record. As soon as she made contact with both, she knew they were gone.

"I knew I was looking for a pitch to drive,” Sims said. “Right inside and I just took it to left center.”

Much of the Westview softball team plays basketball, making it familiar with what it takes to win a state championship. The Chargers didn't lose a game in Murfreesboro this week.

"Our offense showed up when we needed it to the most,” Sims said.

Timely hits and dominant pitching provided the recipe. And Sims did both in the championship game. To go with her seven RBIs, Sims controlled the pace of the game from the circle.

She recorded five strikeouts and allowed just five runs in her 4⅔ innings.

"It’s fun,” Sims said. “We worked hard for it. In basketball we won two. We’re used to it. We’re all happy.”
