Max Homa's take on why he believes he's on Tiger Woods' TGL team will surprise you

LOUISVILLE — Max Homa gave a quick lesson Tuesday when it comes to TGL, the interactive golf league headed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

And he kept coming back to one word: fun.

"It should be fun," he said. "I think you're going to have to see it to fully get it for everybody like it's a lot bigger than playing simulator golf.

"It is straight up supposed to be fun. I'm hoping everyone doesn't take it, make it sound like it's too serious of a thing. It will be serious competition but I think a lot of it is just supposed to be fun, showcasing some cool golf."

Homa joined Woods' Jupiter Links Golf Club, a team that also includes Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner. And true to his personality, the No. 9 golfer in the world downplayed his skills when it comes to the team.

"I think if you look at our team, with Tiger and Tom and then myself and Kevin Kisner, I think they got me and Kev for, you know, our mouths," Homa said. "Tiger and Tom can play the golf."

Homa played with Woods for the first two rounds of the Masters. He watched Woods make history at Augusta when the Jupiter Island resident became the first to make 24 consecutive Masters cuts. But while Woods faltered on the weekend, shooting a 10-over 82 on Saturday, Homa went on to complete his best-ever major, finishing tied for third.

Homa has an 8:37 a.m. tee time for Thursday's first round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, and will be in another marquee grouping with Jordan Spieth and Jupiter's Brooks Koepka.

That experience of playing with Woods at Augusta, Homa said, will help him in the season's second major.

"Learned that I can handle my nerve," he said. "It was a long week just on the butterfly side, playing with Tiger the first two days with some weather, long couple days, and then being in the last group Saturday, second-to-last group Sunday."

Of course, come January when TGL debuts, the vibe will be completely different.

"The facility is insane," Homa said. "It's like grass and you can adjust the putting green and it will be very unique. So I think it will be fun.

"And that kind of intimate environment should bring out some more personality, and as I've been kind of talking about for months now, all of this is supposed to just be for the fans. I feel like this is something that is leaning into the fans' experience."

TGL, backed by TMRW Sports, is preparing for its inaugural season, which starts Jan. 7. The league will be played in Palm Beach Gardens at a venue being built on the north campus of Palm Beach State College.
