Maurice Hampton Jr., former MUS star, transferring to play Memphis football and baseball

Maurice Hampton Jr. is coming home.

The former Memphis University School two-sport star announced Friday his decision to transfer to Memphis. He told The Commercial Appeal he intends to play football (for head coach Ryan Silverfield) and baseball. The Tigers baseball program is in the process of hiring a replacement for former head coach Kerrick Jackson, who was recently named head coach at Missouri.

Hampton said he has one season of eligibility remaining for each sport. He added he expects to be eligible to play immediately.

A 4-star defensive back and outfielder, Hampton initially signed with LSU to play football and baseball in 2019. He was also selected in the 23rd round of that year's Major League Baseball draft but honored his commitment to LSU.

In 2021, Hampton (6-foot, 207 pounds) transferred to Samford. He played baseball for the Bulldogs in 2022 and appeared in just four games in 2023. He did not play football at Samford.

Hampton was Tennessee's Mr. Football and Mr. Baseball as a senior at MUS. He was part of LSU's 2019 national championship team, appearing in 13 games (one start) that season. Hampton's sophomore season with LSU football was marred by injuries, and he played in eight games at safety tallying 19 solo tackles. He entered the transfer portal in March 2021, during LSU's baseball season.

Earlier this week, Memphis also secured a commitment from Oklahoma transfer offensive lineman Cullen Montgomery.
