Mathew Barzal to represent Islanders at 2024 NHL All-Star Game

The NHL announced the first 32 players who will participate in this year’s All-Star weekend, and winger Mathew Barzal has been selected as the Islanders' lone representative so far.

Between Bo Horvat, Noah Dobson, and Brock Nelson, the Isles had numerous potential All-Stars this season, but instead, it is Barzal who will get the chance to represent the organization for the third-time in his career.

The former first-round pick was also an All-Star in 2020 and 2021, and he took home the title of fastest skater after defeating superstar Connor McDavid his first year participating.

"It's nice to be selected," Barzal said following Thursday's game. "It's definitely very exciting. You're around the best in the game and that's where I want to be, I'm really looking forward to it."

Barzal is certainly deserving of the honor this year, as he's been one of New York's most consistent and reliable forwards since moving to the wing full-time to accommodate Horvat's arrival as the top-line center.

The 26-year-old seems to have found another gear playing alongside Horvat and captain Anders Lee, producing a team-leading 39 points through 37 games.

Barzal also sits second on the team and is tied for ninth in the league with 29 assists. His 10 goals are on pace to top his career-high set during his Calder-Trophy-winning 2017 campaign.

"When you're an All-Star in the National Hockey League, it's a pretty special thing and he's a special player," head coach Lane Lambert said. "I'm excited for him and very happy he's getting this opportunity again."

All-Star weekend will take place Feb. 1-3 in Toronto.
