Essex Post 91 ousted from 2023 Northeast Regionals

After nearly reaching last year's championship round, Essex Post 91 will look to chase history at this week's Northeast Regionals in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The three-time reigning Vermont American Legion baseball state champions open play in the double-elimination tournament vs. Greece, New York, on Wednesday. Last summer, Essex Post 91 was a win away from earning a spot in the championship game. A Vermont Legion team has yet to claim the regional tournament and advance to the Legion World Series.

Aug. 4: Essex Post 91 eliminated from tournament play

Vermont state champion Essex Post 91 saw its tournament run at this year's Northeast Regionals end after three days on Friday.

Essex dropped a 10-4 decision to Nashua (N.H.) in an elimination game at Sutton Field in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Nashua collected 11 hits and broke free of Essex with a back-to-back four-run frames in the fourth and fifth innings.

Trevor Arsenault (1-for-2, 2 runs, 2 walks) tripled and drove in a run to pace Essex. Owen Pinaud (single) and Hazen Randall (sacrifice fly) gave Essex a 2-0 lead through two innings before Nashua broke out.

Aug. 3: Cumberland edges Essex in 8-inning affair

Despite leveling the score with a two-run home run, Essex Post 91 dropped a 4-3, eight-inning decision to Cumberland (R.I.) during Day 2 of Northeast Regionals on Thursday night.

Luke Plumer's one-out single brought home the decisive run in Cumberland's walk-off win in extras. Essex remains alive in the tournament and will play at approximately 11:45 a.m. Friday in an elimination game vs. Nashua (N.H.).

Essex Post 91 trailed 3-1 in the sixth inning when Trevor Arsenault (2-for-2) blasted a two-run homer. Gabe White started the contest, going 5.2 innings and allowing three hits, three runs and five walks while fanning five. Matt Safer took the loss in relief (1.2IP, 3H, 1R, 1K).

For Cumberland, Joaquin Cardoso earned the win, yielding four hits and no runs over the final two innings, while Andy Ray picked up two hits at the plate.

Aug. 2: Essex cruises to opening win at regionals

Andrew Goodrich's pitching and his bat pushed Essex Post 91 to a 7-0 win over Greece (N.Y.) Post 468 in Wednesday's opening round of the Northeast Regionals.

Goodrich went five innings and yielded one hit, no runs and two walks while fanning seven over 72 pitches (51 strikes). He also doubled in a 2-for-4, two-RBI day at the plate for Essex, which will play next Thursday night.

Hazen Randall (3-for-4, 3 runs), Eli Bostwick (1-for-3, RBI) and Owen Pinuad (1-for-3, RBI) also contributed offensively for the Vermont state champions.

Essex, the home team, scored three times in its first at-bat, added a run in the second inning and plated three more runs in the third frame to build the 7-0 margin. Braedon Jones came on in relief of Goodrich and tossed a pair of scoreless frames, allowing a pair of hits.
