Mars Area High School retires David Bednar’s number

Mars Area High School retired current Pirates pitcher David Bednar’s number during a pep rally on Friday.

According to the MLB, his jersey number is the first to be retired from the school.

Don Kelly, bench coach for the pirates, was also in attendance.

“Enjoy every moment. Cherish every friendship and relationship that you have,” Bednar said to the students in attendance. “Mars is such a special place. Anything is possible.”

Bednar graduated from the district in 2013 before going on to play at the collegiate level at Lafayette.

He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2016 MLB draft before being traded to the Pirates in 2021.
