Marquette athletic director Bill Scholl will retire once successor is named

Marquette athletic director Bill Scholl is set to retire.

The school announced on Tuesday that the 67-year-old Scholl will step down as soon as a successor is named.

Scholl has been MU's athletic director since 2014. He was named an Under Armour AD of the Year Award winner by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2020.

"It has been an honor to work at such a special place surrounded by remarkable people," Scholl said in a statement. "I am most proud of our student-athletes, who have excelled not only in competition but in the classroom and the community as women and men for others. My family and I deeply appreciate how this community has welcomed us from the start. Marquette will always have a special place in our hearts."

Before MU, Scholl was the Ball State AD from 2012-14. He also spent 23 years in the athletic department at Notre Dame.

The Golden Eagles have won 20 team conference championships over the last decade. Scholl also helped oversee the construction of the Athletic and Human Performance Research Center, a $24 million facility that includes space for research, strength and conditioning and locker rooms for the lacrosse and golf teams. The second phase of the AHPRC, including a new facility for the men's basketball team, is in the fundraising stage.

"Bill had two goals when he arrived at Marquette – to convey excellence and responsibility within the athletics department, and to provide for, nurture and develop student-athletes," MU President Michael Lovell said. "He achieved those goals and contributed to the legacy of our athletics program in countless ways that have benefited our student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff, and for that, our Marquette community will always be grateful. I appreciate all he has done for our athletics program and for Marquette University."
