Marlins girls 14-and-under hockey takes fifth at state tourney

Feb. 20—MITCHELL — The Mitchell Marlins girls under-14 team picked up two wins during state-tournament action this weekend.

The Marlins opened the weekend with an 8-0 loss to Oahe on Friday before taking down Sioux Center, 3-1 on Saturday and then beating Aberdeen, 2-1 on Sunday.

Against Sioux Center, Livaya Mimmack scored twice, opening the scoring 24 seconds into the second period and then giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead later in the frame. She also assisted on Alannah Lang's third-period goal. Analeigh Hotchkiss picked up two assists in the win and Kaylie OConnor made 18 saves on 19 shots.

Hotchkiss found the back of the net Sunday against Aberdeen, tying the game at one in the first period. Mimmack scored the eventual game-winning goal in the third, finding twine three minutes and seven seconds into the final frame. Gabrielle Erdmann and Aaralyn Barta each had an assist, while OConnor stopped 27 of the 28 shots she faced, compiling a .964 save percentage in the win.

The Mitchell Marlins PeeWee B team beat Brandon Valley, 6-2 on Friday but lost to Oahe, 5-1 on Saturday and fell to Sioux Falls 2 on Sunday, 8-3.

Deyton Puetz and Kristopher Hatwan scored a pair of goals in Friday's win over Brandon Valley, while Tate Goldammer and Preston Maeschen each added one. Hatwan also had two assists in the win.

Puetz was the lone goal scorer against Oahe, with an assist from Maeschen.

Against Sioux Falls, Puetz recorded a hat trick, scoring all three Marlin goals. He was assisted by Maeschen on two of them and by Treston Zens on the other.

The Mitchell Marlins PeeWee C lost 8-1 to Huron on Friday and lost 6-5 to Watertown on Saturday.

Bode Murphy scored against Huron on Friday for Mitchell, getting an assist from William Dooley.

Murphy scored again Saturday against Watertown, tying the game up 1-1 in the first period. Kaiden Colomb picked up a pair of second-period goals, and Graeme Polreis, Dooley and Murphy all scored in the frame, as well, as Mitchell opened up a 5-3 lead. Watertown scored the game's final three goals to get the win.

Murphy had three assists, and Caleb Machado picked up an assist as well.
