Marlin girls claim third place at state tourney to end season

Mar. 3—WATERTOWN, S.D. — The Mitchell Marlins girls varsity hockey team finished in third place at the state tournament with a 4-3 victory over Oahe on Sunday at the Prairie Lakes Ice Arena.

Mitchell trailed 2-0 less than 7 minutes into the game but rallied back to even the score before the period was out. Makenna Tronnes scored a power-play goal and Brynlee Sabers had a goal to tie the game at 2-all, assisted by Tristen Zimmer.

After a scoreless second period, Reese Amick put Mitchell ahead less than 2 minutes into the third period, assisted by Sabers. A minute later, Livaya Mimmack scored a goal to make it 4-2, assisted by Zimmer. Oahe tallied a goal to make it 4-3 with less than four minutes left but Mitchell held on from there.

Mitchell outshot Oahe, 25-16, including 14-4 in the third period. Mitchell goalie Eva Ramm earned the victory with 13 saves.

The Marlins, who lost by the same 4-3 score on Saturday in the semifinals to Aberdeen, finished the season with an 11-5-1 record in South Dakota play.
