Mark D'Arezzo of North Kingstown wins Girls Team Coach of the Year at All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards

Mark D'Arezzo of North Kingstown won Girls Team Coach of the Year honors last week at the All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards, presented by BlueCross & BlueShield of Rhode Island.

Other finalists were Erin Terry of East Greenwich and Kaitlyn Rachiele of Pilgrim.

Winning the state girls soccer title in 2021 was terrific for D’Arezzo and the Skippers, but how North Kingstown won the title this year was downright magical. The Skippers lost their first match of the year, which turned out to be the wakeup call they needed. D’Arezzo refocused the group and NK lost one match after Sept. 8 and never lost momentum once the postseason hit.

The Skippers didn’t just win in the playoffs, they dominated, winning three matches by a combined 10-2 score, beating La Salle 3-1 in the to become the first public school to win back-to-back state titles since South Kingstown won their third straight in 1999.

The All-State Rhode Island High School Sports Awards are part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards program, the largest of its kind in the nation with regional shows and now a national show later this summer.
