BEAVERTON — No. 5 Sheldon Irish doubles duo Emerson Kearney and Hayden Kearney proved they can compete as they reached the OSAA 6A girls doubles state championship final at Babette Horenstein Tennis Center on Saturday, falling to No. 3 Sofia Bell and Mishi Batinkova of Jesuit 6-4, 6-3.

"It was really nerve-wracking being a freshman in the state championship final," Hayden said. "But I did it for my sister and wanted to put whatever was out there for her and it wasn't our day."

"I think it was kind of even in the first set with only one break," Emerson said. "The second set was two but I feel like we held our own and did pretty good."

Three of the four matches the Kearney sisters played in the tournament went three sets.

In the first round, the Irish pair defeated Lake Oswego 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, then No. 2 Sunset 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the third round and finally No. 4 Westview 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.

"We're going to be even stronger next year," Sheldon head coach Bill Temple said. "We won the district championship, so right now and for the next several years Sheldon's girls tennis looks incredible."

Temple, who has coached the Irish girl's tennis program since 2012, said earlier this month he plans to retire.

"It's so reflective and to also realize how fortunate we are to have kids who are committed to the sport," Temple said of the playoff experience as a coach. "And parents who are committed to the kids, so it's an privilege to do it.

"We need to give a shout out to Eugene Swim and Tennis Club because they are really helping build up the feeder program."

Temple first started coaching the boys program at North Eugene from 1999-2003 and then the girls program from 2004-2008.

Assistant coach Angie Hamilton is expected to take over as Sheldon's head coach.
