Manchester United vs Liverpool LIVE!

Mohamed Salah scored an 84th-minute penalty to salvage a 2-2 draw for Liverpool at Man Utd in the Premier League on Sunday.

The title challengers had looked like suffering a first defeat in the league since February after two stunning goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo put United ahead at Old Trafford.

Luis Diaz had put a dominant Liverpool in front in the first half, but Jurgen Klopp's team trailed in the final 10 minutes of regulation time until Aaron Wan-Bissaka brought down substitute Harvey Elliott in the box.

With boos ringing around the stadium, Salah calmly sent United goalkeeper Andre Onana the wrong way to move Liverpool level on points with first-place Arsenal and one ahead of Manchester City in third.

“We should have won, that’s clear. But we caused problems ourselves. They had no shots in the first half so 1-0 is the lowest of possible results.

“The stadium’s coming and we needed a few minutes to settle then they score another screamer. Wonderful goal.

“We had big chances before and after they scored. That’s now the situation. It’s a point at Manchester United, I know people see it as two points lost.

“I see it as we have a point more than we had before the game. It’s an away game at Manchester United, I think for us this game is more special than for other teams because against us they put an extra shift in. That’s how it is.

“We’ll face that again in a week at Everton, these are the games we have to be ready for. We fully deserved the equaliser, that’s it.”

Kobbie Mainoo gives his reaction

17:42 , Marc Mayo

“Disappointed to be honest, second half we performed really well and picked it up. Minor mistakes, iron them out and we win the game.

“It’s an unbeatable feeling, first professional Old Trafford goal, but without the three points I can’t be too happy. It felt good so got a bit ahead of myself [with the celebration]!

“Little mistakes happen in games but they can be detrimental and they’ve cost us. They’re a very good side, it takes it out of you but you have to bounce back.

“Again [for the first goal], details. As a team we have our jobs but he’s pulled away in space, so...”

Time for the second half at Old Trafford and neither side is making any changes.

TV cameras have also shown Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford in the Old Trafford executive box in conversation with Sam Allardyce! Erik ten Hag’s successor may have been found...

Chaos continues to reign supreme at Old Trafford

16:26 , Marc Mayo

Erik ten Hag may well consider changes in that break because his system continues to flatter to deceive.

Bruno Fernandes has been poor on the ball and Diogo Dalot stepping into midfield in possession hasn’t given them any more control.

Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho are anonymous up front, with Marcus Rashford wayward.

Antony, Amad Diallo, Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen are Ten Hag’s options to inject some life into his frontline.

The stats say it all

16:20 , Marc Mayo

Ultimately, Liverpool may well be the more disappointed side at the break.

They have created chances at will, particularly since a more even first quarter of an hour, yet only lead by Luis Diaz’s goal.

Manchester United haven’t had a shot yet have conceded 14!

Half-time!

16:17 , Marc Mayo

Conor Bradley is the next to see a shot blocked inside the box.

In comes the corner and it’s easily hoicked clear.

Liverpool are good value for their lead yet United have been so far off the pace, they will be disappointed to only have one goal to their name.

Time is running out for Liverpool to justify all this dominance with a second goal before the break.

Darwin Nunez is next to take aim from just inside the box and curls his effort off-target.

Decent stop by Andre Onana to parry Mohamed Salah’s first-time shot from the 18-yard line.

Game No31 of this Premier League season for both teams.

Liverpool need to win to reclaim top spot.

Here come the teams!

Anthony Taylor is our referee for today’s north-west derby.

The official will know all about what this game means as he’s from the Greater Manchester area... however, it’s common knowledge he is in fact an Altrincham fan.

That will surely put all the social media conspiracies to bed!

Jurgen Klopp gives his take ahead of the game

15:22 , Marc Mayo

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is keen for his players to have some street smarts about them in this derby - but to remain focused on the game rather than the occasion.

“All the opponents coming up, for different reasons, are really difficult to play against us,” he tells Sky Sports.

“I think you have to understand the location, that’s definitely important... if we do well, it’s much calmer and that’s the idea. And we have to try to score goals.”

Big match-ups all over the pitch

15:18 , Marc Mayo

There are plenty of areas where this game will be won or lost.

Diogo Dalot up against Mohamed Salah promises to be a great battle, while Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire will have to combine their differing abilities to keep a lid on Darwin Nunez.

Jarell Quansah and Rasmus Hojlund are both powerful, athletic but youthful talents who will square off up the other end.

The battle for the midfield will also be key, has Casemiro got the legs to chase down Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, and can Wataru Endo shut down Kobbie Mainoo?

Erik ten Hag has called on his players to use their “anger” at losing to Chelsea.

The United boss admits it’s “crazy” that he’s having to call upon another new defensive line-up with Willy Kambwala starting after injuries to Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans, he also suggests these issues have been behind some of the late goals they’ve conceded.

On bringing Marcus Rashford back, Ten Hag discusses Antony being fatigued following the effort he put in against Chelsea.

FA Cup drama banished from Man Utd minds

14:52 , Marc Mayo

Bruno Fernandes has told his Manchester United teammates to forget that they beat Liverpool here in the FA Cup only a few weeks ago.

That 4-3 win was the most entertaining seven-goal thriller the Red Devils had been involved in this season, until about three days go...

Fernandes told Sky Sports in the tunnel: "It's a completely different game to the cup, but we know what we're capable of doing. There are many things we'll have to do very, very well today to win.

"We have to leave [the defeat to Chelsea] behind, learn from our mistakes and do better. We know that. We can't be thinking about how tired we are because we have a big game, everyone is playing a lot and we haven’t played as many games as we want so we cant talk about tiredness.”

Virgil van Dijk, meanwhile, has admitted Liverpool are out to prove a point this afternoon.

He told Sky: "Today's a big game for many reasons, obviously its was very disappointing in the cup and we want to show a reaction.

"I think we have to shut [Man City and Arsenal winning] out completely anyway, it doesn't matter if you play first, second or third. We all know how big this game is, we have to try and stay calm."

Three changes for Liverpool

14:45 , Marc Mayo

Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate drop out for Andrew Robertson and Jarell Quansah in the Liverpool XI.

Many had Konate down as one of the players of the year recently but he’s seemingly been ousted from Jurgen Klopp’s first choice XI.

Wataru Endo is also fit to start after a knock as Ryan Gravenberch returns to the bench.

Casemiro fit for Man Utd as Kambwala starts

14:42 , Marc Mayo

No Raphael Varane or Jonny Evans for United today but Casemiro is the sole piece of good news from their triple injury doubt ahead of this game.

Willy Kambwala steps into the defence with Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford preferred in attack over Antony.

Manchester United beat Liverpool 9-1 in their Under-18 Premier League clash yesterday.

Striker Ethan Wheatley scored a 57-minute hat-trick for United, with James Scanlon also grabbing a brace in a big win at Liverpool’s academy ground in Kirkby.

Liverpool were missing eight of the team that beat Arsenal 7-1 in the FA Cup Youth Cup just two months ago and those absentees were keenly felt.

Erik ten Hag says he wants to see more of the same from Antony after his impressive display against Chelsea.

“I know he’s capable of it,” said Ten Hag. “I’ve seen it so often, when I was manager of Ajax, but we haven’t seen this.

“Maybe in the start [of his United career] we’ve seen a glimpse, in the first three games when he scored three goals, but after that, [only] incidentally, like against Barcelona last season when he scored the winning goal, but he’s capable of it. Against Chelsea, I saw the Antony I want to see.”

Stats

13:33 , Giuseppe Muro

- Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final victory at Old Trafford last month was only their fifth win in 20 matches against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool (D8, L7).

- United have faced 225 shots in 2024, which is more than any other side in Europe's top five leagues.

- Liverpool have won 16 matches and scored 59 goals in all competitions in 2024, more than any other side in Europe's top five leagues.

- Mohamed Salah has scored 13 goals in 14 appearances against Manchester United for Liverpool, including eight in his last five at Old Trafford in all competitions.

13:25 , Giuseppe Muro

Jurgen Klopp knows not only do his side have to rectify the mistakes of last month's FA Cup defeat but also avoid the sort of slip-up which ultimately cost them the title five years ago.

In the first of their epic Premier League run-ins with Manchester City, the Reds won 10 of their last 12 matches but draws at Manchester United and Everton saw them finish second by a point with a record runners-up tally of 97.

Klopp has won just twice and drawn four in 10 visits to their arch-rivals but that has to change on his final, short trip down the M62 if they are to maintain their advantage at the top of the table.

Three weeks ago their bid for an unprecedented quadruple was ended by a goal in the final minute of extra time and it is their only defeat in the last dozen matches.

"We were really good that day but we didn't finish the situations off," was Klopp's assessment as his side looked like they were running on empty in the additional 30 minutes.

"Extra-time was too much for us and we couldn't avoid the mistakes we could before (in normal time).

"It was the day we couldn't control it any more, United turned the game around and United is a top side playing at home but we have to do is what we did from minute 15 to 70-something.

"Football is not that easy. We have to find a way to cause United problems. They will try the same.

"Against this opponent, in this stadium, we better play a really good game if we want something from it."

Erik ten Hag says his players will be “angry” at Old Trafford after their stoppage-time collapses against Brentford and Chelsea.

The five points United have dropped late in their past two games have left their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.

“We have to step up and make better decisions,” said Ten Hag, who added: "We can play to a very high standard. We can compete with the best and beat the best in the Premier League.

“When you can do that, you can also do it across Europe. We need to learn how to bring big games over the line."

13:12 , Giuseppe Muro

Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag have called for an end to tragedy chanting.

Last month's FA Cup meeting was marred by incidents of tragedy chanting about the Hillsborough disaster.

Additional work has been done by both clubs on the subject in the intervening weeks.

"It is super-important. I don't hear it, honestly, when I am on the sideline. I heard after the game that it happened and it obviously is not great," said Klopp.

"But in general it is just helpful that we educate our kids in specific things: respect, understanding, all these things.

"I just see two of the biggest clubs in the world, so let's just show a bit of class in these moments, don't sing this or sing that.

"Just show class, let the teams fight on the pitch, let's play football, that is all fine. Besides that, just show a bit of class, that would be my wish for all of us."

Ten Hag said in a message to United supporters: “The atmosphere our fans generated was incredible that afternoon.

"If we can produce the same noise levels around Old Trafford, then we have already seen what a positive force it can be and the impact that it has on the players.

“As such, it is part of my duty to remind every supporter fortunate enough to be at the game that it must be enjoyed in the proper way, and not used as an excuse for abusing rival fans about Hillsborough, Heysel or any other historic tragedies.”

A reminder of how things stand at the top...

Arsenal moved one point above Liverpool with their 3-0 win at Brighton yesterday, while Manchester City kept up the pressure with a 4-2 win at Crystal Palace.

Third-placed City are level on points with Liverpool but have played a game more

Liverpool are set to welcome back Wataru Endo for their huge game against Manchester United.

Endo missed Thursday’s 3-1 win over Sheffield United due to a minor injury but the midfielder should be fit to return at Old Trafford.

His availability will be a major boost for Liverpool, who remain without Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson and Diogo Jota.

Mohamed Salah was taken off after an hour against Sheffield United but Klopp confirmed after the game that move was to give the Egyptian a rest.

Manchester United teenager Willy Kambwala is in line to start against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are both major doubts after being forced off in Thursday’s dramatic 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, leaving Erik ten Hag with major defensive issues.

Kambwala came on alongside Harry Maguire at centre-back in the second half at Stamford Bridge and could make just his second start for United.

Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are still out. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diego Dalot, who conceded a late penalty in the Chelsea defeat, will continue at full-back.

United are also sweating on the fitness of Casemiro after he went off at Stamford Bridge.
