This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Manchester City FC 2 - 0 Everton FC

Manchester City vs Everton

14:34

Manchester City move to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Everton at the Etihad Stadium. City did not get going at all in the first hour or so and it took them until the 71st minute to register their first attempt on target. That was Haaland's thumping finish past Pickford to open the scoring, which the Norway international added to 14 minutes later after being played in by substitute De Bruyne and brushing aside Branthwaite. Everton had a Beto goal correctly ruled out for offside but otherwise offered very little. Up next for City in the league is a home match with Chelsea next Saturday, which follows a Champions League trip to FC Copenhagen, while Everton host fellow strugglers Crystal Palace a week on Monday. That is all for today's live text coverage, thanks for joining.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:33

CHANCE! Pickford is caught in the middle of nowhere and De Bruyne attempts to lift the ball over his head, but there is too much on it and it lands on the roof of the net.

FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 2-0 EVERTON

Manchester City vs Everton

14:33

Mykolenko tries to thread a pass in behind for Beto, who was this time onside, but it has too much on it and Ederson gathers.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:29

Yellow Card James David Garner

Manchester City vs Everton

14:28

Foden's low shot is right at Pickford following some nice play from Grealish down the left.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:27

City are just toying with their opponents now as they knock the ball around amongst themselves. There is no need to press for a third goal and potentially leave themselves open at the back.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:26

On his 50th start in the Premier League, Erling Haaland has scored 51 goals in those games - more than any other player has managed in their first 50 starts in the competition.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:25

It is a case of job done as far as City are concerned. It has not been the most memorable of matches, but they found a way to break down their visitors and are well on their way to reclaiming top spot.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:24

GOAL RULED OUT! Beto slides a nice first-time finish past Ederson after being played in behind, but he was quite clearly offside. No VAR needed for that one.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:23

Ten minutes have been added on at the end of the second half. That probably does not benefit either side at this stage.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:20

Substitution Idrissa Gana Gueye Youssef Ramalho Chermiti

Manchester City vs Everton

14:20

Substitution Dwight James Matthew McNeil Lewis Norman Dobbin

Manchester City vs Everton

14:18

GOOOAAALLL!!! HAALAND HAS A SECOND! Even on an off-day, he still manages to bag a couple of goals. Everton finally get bodies forward and are caught out on the counter as De Bruyne slides the ball to Haaland. The Norway international brushes off Tarkowski like he isn't there and tucks past Pickford to make it 2-0.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:18

Substitution Jérémy Baffour Doku Jack Peter Grealish

Manchester City vs Everton

14:18

Assist Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City vs Everton

14:16

Ederson is alert and races way off his line to get to the ball ahead of Beto. McNeil then looks to get a cross into the box from the left, but Walker blocks. The visitors know they have nothing to lose at this point.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:14

Beto dinks the ball over Ederson but also wide of the target. He probably knew he was going to be flagged for offside anyway, which proves the case.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:13

As things stand, Everton will remain in the relegation zone come the end of today, while City will move top of the division.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:12

Replays show that City were perhaps fortunate to have been awarded the corner from which they scored. I'm sure Dyche will have something to say about that if it finishes this way.

Manchester City vs Everton

Manchester City vs Everton

14:09

Substitution Dominic Nathaniel Calvert-Lewin Norberto Bercique Gomes Betuncal

Manchester City vs Everton

14:07

Assist Nathan Benjamin Aké

Manchester City vs Everton

14:07

The home fans are now making plenty of noise. This has been one of City's weakest performances of the campaign, yet they lead with around 15 minutes of normal time to play.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:05

If there is one player Branthwaite did not want his weak clearance to drop to, it was Haaland. There was clearly some frustration behind that strike - he absolutely belted it home.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:03

GOOOAAALLL!!! CITY LEAD 1-0!!

Manchester City vs Everton

14:03

Everton winger McNeil is back on the field after being seen to. Garner is the next to go down, but he is quickly back to his feet.

Manchester City vs Everton

14:01

Rodri fires a shot into the stands from 25 yards out. City's shooting today has been miles off - almost quite literally. McNeil is now down, further disrupting the home side's momentum.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:58

It comes as no surprise to see City back in complete control of the match. Again, though, there is not a great deal to show for it as Everton's defenders are working overtime. Pickford has still yet to make a save.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:56

Everton have drawn their last three Premier League games. The Toffees last drew four consecutive league games in August-September 2022. This would be a huge point for the visitors, one that would take them out of the bottom three.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:55

De Bruyne has instantly made a difference. He has played a couple of good balls on the edge of the box, but has been let down by his team-mates. Haaland has stepped up a level, too, but his fizzing ball is turned behind.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:53

Branthwaite is having a superb game at the back - not for the first time this season. Foden plays the ball through to Alvarez, but the city forward comes out second best in that battle.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:51

The opening 15 minutes of the second half have been incredibly disjointed. Guardiola will want things to settle down and for his side to start turning the screw.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:49

Substitution Matheus Luiz Nunes Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City vs Everton

13:49

Substitution Manuel Obafemi Akanji Kyle Andrew Walker

Manchester City vs Everton

13:48

The experienced Coleman comes on for Godfrey in a like-for-like change. The departing Everton player does not look in good shape at all.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:48

Godfrey has gone down again, and the Everton medical staff are on again. This will surely be the end of the defender's game.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:46

Gueye has put in a number of challenges today, but this latest one on Foden - a late one - earns him the first booking of the game.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:45

Godfrey is able to continue after being seen to. Word is that he is struggling through illness, rather than any sort of knock. Not what Dyche wants either way.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:44

Godfrey has gone down and is being seen to be the physio. Doku comes over to seemingly apologise, so it may well be that he caught the Everton defender.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:44

Doku plays another teasing ball towards the front post, but it is once again cut out. There is no doubt that he is City's liveliest player, but it has been the same outcome time and time again.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:43

Gueye closes down Alvarez and the City forward's shot is well off target. It has just not clicked for the home side today at all.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:41

Doku's low cross towards the front post is met by Tarkowski, who is then nudged by Alvarez to win a free-kick. Bernardo and De Bruyne are already warming up.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:40

There is a little more pace to City's game early in the second half, although it is ultimately the same end result: no way through on goal.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:38

Everton, who you have to say would be more than happy with a point today, get us back under way in Manchester. Neither manager has made any changes at the interval.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:28

Guardiola will not be too concerned just yet given the options he has available from the bench. Grealish, Bernardo and De Bruyne are all among the back-up options and it may well be that we see at least one of those brought on for the start of the second half. Dyche mainly has defensive options to choose from, but you would expect to see a returning Onana introduced at some point.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:25

Manchester City and Everton go into half time level at 0-0 after a pretty poor first half of football. City failed to register a single attempt on target in the opening 45 minutes on home soil, which is a real rarity for them. Guardiola's men had a weak penalty call rejected at the end of the half, but that aside there has been very little to talk about.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:21

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0-0 EVERTON

Manchester City vs Everton

13:21

POSSIBLE HANDBALL! Akanji tries to place the ball in the corner but it hits the upper arm of Tarkowski. After a short VAR check, it is adjudged no penalty should be awarded. The right call, it must be said.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:18

Alvarez profits from an error and tries to play a first-time pass to Haaland, but it is hit straight to Pickford.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:18

Three minutes have been added on at the end of the first half, so a little longer for Guardiola to wait for that chat with his players!

Manchester City vs Everton

13:15

Ake thumps the ball into an Everton player in the area, following some promising play from Doku, which pretty much sums things up for City.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:14

Half time is only a couple of minutes away now and I think Guardiola will happily accept the chance to wake his players up. Everton have actually looked the better side over the past five minutes.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:12

The atmosphere is very flat inside the Etihad Stadium. That is down to a mixture of the early kick-off time and the - let's face it - lack of anything of interest going on on the field.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:10

SHOT! Young's cross is only half dealt with and it drops to Harrison. It is a good shooting opportunity, but he bends the shot well off target from just inside the box.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:10

For all of City's dominance of the ball, you just know Everton will create the odd chance. On this occasion, a cross into the box from the left goes right the way through.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:09

Alvarez drifts out to the right, perhaps knowing Godfrey is there to be got at. On this occasion, the Everton defender wins his side a free-kick to earn a bit of a breather.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:07

Calvert-Lewin is offering very little for Everton as he again fails to hold the ball up. The problem for Dyche is he does not really have any other options up top. Meanwhile, Godfrey is being given a tough time of things by Doku.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:05

Mykolenko gets his head to the latest cross into the box. City's best chance of getting through Everton is down the flanks, but they are not having much joy through crosses.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:04

Foden slips the ball down the right for Nunes - a fantastic pass - but the midfielder's attempted centre for Haaland is cut out for a corner. City are definitely starting to have a bit more joy in the final third now.

Manchester City vs Everton

13:01

ATTEMPT! Calvert-Lewin nods down a free-kick but it is to nobody in particular. Moments later up the other end, Doku - City's liveliest player - skips past Godfrey and sends a ball into the area for Haaland, who sends his header off target. Half a chance, that.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:59

Gueye and Dias both win the ball for their side with fantastic challenges in the space of about five seconds. Doku finally gets in behind down the left, with Godfrey failing to take the ball from him, but his cross is met by Branthwaite.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:57

Tarkowski gets across to halt Foden's run - superb challenge. The visitors are basically playing with a back eight, so it is certainly not easy for City to find a way through.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:56

Everton's workrate has been impressive in the opening quarter of the match, barely giving City's attackers a chance to breathe when in possession. Foden decides to take matters into his own hands, but his 18-yard drive is blocked.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:53

Doku has a shot blocked in the Everton box. There are early signs of the home side now stepping up the pace.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:53

There is very little happening so far. City have not got out of first gear and have yet to register a shot of any sort. Everton have had two attempts, neither of which were on target.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:50

This match is panning out as expected so far. City are in control of the ball, while Everton are relying on quick passes up the field to cause some panic at the back for the hosts. It has the feel of an early Saturday kick-off to it, this one.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:48

Calvert-Lewin, who has not scored for 17 matches, decides to try to lob Ederson from about 30 yards and gets the effort completely wrong. McNeil was alongside him and playing him in would have been the better option.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:46

Gueye cynically takes out Doku to help disrupt City's momentum. The home side have yet to create any openings, but they are happy to bide their time.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:45

The fact it is a goalkeeper receiving treatment means play cannot resume until Ederson has been seen to. Godfrey appeared to catch the City stopper in the face with a trailing boot. After a break of about three minutes, we are back under way with Ederson fine to continue.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:43

McNeil plays a brilliant disguised reverse pass in behind for Godfrey to race on to. Ake does not deal with it but Ederson pounces on the ball. He takes a whack in the process and the physios are on.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:40

A first attacking move from Everton culminates in Young's cross being cleared. A simple ball over the top caught the hosts out there - that could be one to keep an eye on today.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:39

Tarkowski steps into midfield and think he has turned over possession, but he went in too roughly on Alvarez. Had a free-kick not been awarded, City would have been left wide open.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:38

City are basically playing with two extra central midfielders in Akanji and Stones, which we have become accustomed to seeing. The home side are dominating possession, which we also expected.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:37

The corner is aimed towards the six-yard box and Pickford is able to punch it clear. From the next attacking wave, Haaland knocks the ball to Foden, who is unable to control it under pressure.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:36

Doku makes the most of a fortunate bounce of the ball to drive into the box. He tries to drive a cross into the centre but it hits Tarkowski and goes behind for the game's first corner.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:34

Everton manager Sean Dyche is watching today's game from the stands, incidentally, as he serves a touchline ban. His side have barely had a touch of the ball in these first few minutes.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:34

Manchester City get us up and running at the Etihad Stadium in this first Premier League game of the weekend. The reigning champions can move top of the division with a win, while Everton need a point to climb out of the bottom three.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:24

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 13 Premier League games against Everton (W11 D2), stretching back to a 4-0 loss at Goodison Park in January 2017. The home side are strong favourites to come out on top today and maintain their winning streak. We are now just a few moments away from kick-off.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:19

Everton stick with the same starting line-up as the one that snatched a late 2-2 draw against Tottenham this time last week. Calvert-Lewin is without a goal in 17 matches but retains his place up top, while former City midfielder Harrison will play just off him in attacking midfield. There is a change elsewhere in the matchday squad as Onana is back among the substitutes after missing two games with a knee complaint.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:19

Guardiola has a fully-fit squad to choose from and has made four changes to the Man City side that defeated Brentford five days ago. De Bruyne and Bernardo drop down to the bench, where they are joined by Grealish once again, while Nunes and Doku come into the XI. Stones and Akanji get the nod over benched pair Walker and Gvardiol in defence.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:08

Everton subs: Nathan Patterson, Michael Keane, Amadou Onana, Joao Virginia, Beto, Seamus Coleman, Youssef Chermiti, Mackenzie Hunt, Lewis Dobbin.

Manchester City vs Everton

EVERTON XI (4-2-3-1): Jordan Pickford; Ben Godfrey, James Tarkowski, Jarrad Branthwaite, Vitaliy Mykolenko; Idrissa Gueye, James Garner; Ashley Young, Jack Harrison, Dwight McNeil; Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:08

Man City subs: Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Stefan Ortega, Bernardo Silva, Josko Gvardiol, Oscar Bobb, Jacob Wright, Rico Lewis.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:03

MANCHESTER CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Ederson; John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake; Matheus Nunes, Rodri; Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez, Jeremy Doku; Erling Haaland.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:03

Everton are scrapping at the opposite end of the table as they sit down in 18th place, one point adrift of Luton Town in 17th having played a game more. The Toffees, not helped by a 10-point deduction they still hope to have at least partially overturned, have drawn three successive league games and are winless in six in the competition - a run that includes a 3-1 home loss to today's opponents in December.

Manchester City vs Everton

12:03

City enter this contest on a nine-game winning run in all competitions and have gone 12 without defeat since a 1-0 reverse at Aston Villa in early December. Pep Guardiola's men recovered from a goal down to beat Brentford 3-1 on Monday and are now two points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand in what is shaping up to be a thrilling title race.
