Manchester City falls just shy of Premier League history in walloping Watford (video)
Manchester City really wanted to get the taste of a shock loss to Norwich last weekend out of its mouth. And Watford suffered the consequences.
City unleashed a torrent of goals Saturday at the Etihad in a manner unseen in the Premier League era, going up 5-0 in less than 18 minutes and ultimately winning 8-0 with a Bernardo Silva hat trick in tow.
The record scoreline in the Premier League era (1992-present) is Manchester United’s 9-0 victory over Ipswich Town on March 4, 1995. Kevin De Bruyne’s only goal Saturday — the eighth and final of the match — came in the 85th minute and left City some time to tie the record. But it wasn’t to be.
That’s about the only thing that didn’t go City’s way. De Bruyne’s sumptuous cross met the feet of David Silva in the first minute to get City off and running:

Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Nicolas Otamendi also scored inside of 18 minutes, giving City five goals faster than any team in PL history had scored them.

The afternoon was reminiscent of last spring’s FA Cup final, when City pounded Watford 6-0 to complete the first English domestic treble in history.
Consider the Norwich loss a thing of the past.
