BASTROP — Lawn mower man is no longer just a movie to Central Texas high school football.

In a case of truth being stranger than fiction, a man stole a lawn mower from underneath Bastrop Memorial Stadium and interrupted Friday’s rivalry game between Cedar Creek and Bastrop when he started it and pushed it onto the field during the third quarter.

Authorities apprehended the man when he was about halfway across the field on the 35-yard line.

It wasn’t clear whether the man was a student or not, but after being removed from the field he was placed into handcuffs. Bastrop ISD officials had not responded to the Statesman’s request for comment as of publication.

The man entered the field from the visitor’s section on the northeast side of the stadium, which is usually the least crowded part of the facility.

He walked the lawn mower to the field, started it when he reached the sideline and then acted like he was mowing the turf. The incident happened between plays and no players were in danger. It delayed the contest by five minutes.

Though Bastrop Memorial Stadium’s field is turf, there is grass outside of the facility that needs to be maintained.

Bastrop won the game, known as the Crosstown Showdown, 34-7.

Bastrop police remove the lawn mower prankster from the field and later arrested him in the third quarter of the Cedar Creek-Bastrop game Friday at Bastrop Memorial Stadium.
