M/P-B girls hoops fall 40-27 to Washburn

Dec. 9—JAMESTOWN — The Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder girls' basketball team came up on the wrong side of a defensive battle as they lost 40-27 to Washburn High School on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The game started slowly as the first points of the game were not scored until the Thunder's Kalen Kinzell hit a layup to take a 2-0 lead with approximately 4:15 to go in the first quarter. The teams traded baskets from there as the Thunder went into the break up 8-6.

"Just a lack of finishing on our end," Cardinals head coach Jarod Obering said. "We missed, I think five layups in the first quarter, maybe five minutes, if you make even half of those we start getting in a flow but boy when you sit on zero for that long, it starts mentally getting on you a little bit. So, I was proud of how our girls kept their composure. I think that's a sign of maturity, and it was a pretty rough game, physically-wise. It was tough to find flow when it's like that, you have to find ways to win ugly and that's what we did today."

The Cardinals (2-2) took a 10-8 lead early in the second quarter and were able to overcome a run from the Thunder (1-3) that saw them cut their deficit to 16-14. The Cardinals pushed their lead out to 30-21 with 1:30 to go in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth, the Thunder's Brynn Sorenson hit a floater to cut the deficit to 32-23. The Cardinals were able to pull away and get the 40-27 win. Sorenson finished the day with four points.

"They just powered the ball inside," Thunder head coach Corey Mack said. "That was their whole aspect, to get the ball inside, and they sealed us off really well and got, not easy buckets, because were defending really hard, but she's (Ashlyn Schmitz) a strong lady and scored basically when she wanted to. So, that was their big point when they wanted to."

The Thunder were led by Kalen Kinzell's 12 points. The Cardinals were led by Ashlyn Schmitz' 12 points.

The Thunder return to the court at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12, when they take on Griggs-Midkota. The Cardinals are back in action at 7:15 p.m. on Dec. 12, when they go to Velva.
