A&M-Commerce women beat Incarnate Word to advance to Southland basketball semifinals
Mar. 12—LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana — No. 5 seeded Texas A&M University-Commerce beat No. 4 seed Incarnate Word 66-57 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals of the Southland Conference women's basketball tournament.
The Lions outscored Incarnate Word in all four quarters to move into Wednesday's 11 a.m. semifinal against the top seed Lamar. That game is set for the Legacy Center in Lake Charles.
Incarnate Word beat the Lions twice in the regular season, including 70-62 in Commerce on Jan. 11 and 72-61 at San Antonio on Feb. 15.
But the Lions turned it around on the Cardinals to square their season record at 15-15. Incarnate Word dropped to 19-11.
Mia Deck led the Lions with 22 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Also scoring for the Lions were Ahmya Boyce (11), Mary Delgado (8), Dorian Norris (7), Jordyn Beaty (6), Jordyn Newsome (5), Jasmine Payne (5) and Jada Hood (2).
Nina De Leon Negron led the Cardinals with 14 points. Destiny Terrell tossed in nine and Chloe Storer added eight.
Lamar is 23-5 for the season and finished conference play with a 17-1 record.
The Cardinals' only conference loss was 73-70 to A&M-Commerce in Beaumont on Jan. 18. Lamar reversed that decision with a 74-58 win over the Lions in Commerce on Feb. 29.
Akasha Davis led the Cardinals in the 74-58 win with 22 points and 16 rebounds. Sabria Dean tossed in 15 points.
Newsome led the Lions with 18 points, while Deck tossed in 13 and Boyce added 11.
Boyce led the Lions in the 73-70 win over Lamar with 27 points and four assists. Deck finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Newsome added 12 points.
Davis led the Cardinals in that game with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Dean tossed in 14 points.
