Lubbock golfers John Cardinal shoots 72, Brady Shivers remains 3-under in weather-delayed U.S. Mid-Amateur
Lubbock golfer John Cardinal shot 1-over-par 72 with four birdies in Sunday's second round of the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship being played at two courses north of New York City.
Cardinal shot 6-over 76 in his first round at Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, New York, and his four-birdie/five-bogey second round came at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, New York.
Lubbock resident Brady Shivers, meanwhile, was tied for fourth at 3-under after his opening round of 68 on Saturday at Sleepy Hollow. Shivers, part of the morning wave on Saturday, completed his first 18 holes before a weather-related suspension early in the afternoon. Only five of the afternoon groups at Fenway finished the first round on Saturday.
That meant Shivers' originally scheduled late-morning tee time was delayed several hours.
A total of 264 players from 40 countries are in the 42nd U.S. Mid-Amateur. After 36 holes of stroke play, 64 players advance to the match-play bracket. Because of the weather delay, the cut originally scheduled for Sunday will be pushed to Monday.
Shivers, 36, grew up in Seminole and played at Midland College and the University of Houston. He moved from Seminole to Lubbock earlier this year.
"My first (U.S. Mid-Am), I was nervous," he said on the USGA website. "I was big-eyed. It was different. The second one, I felt more confident, got to match play. Match play is my favorite golf, so I just feel that if we can get to match play that's where we are comfortable, and that's where we are trying to be."
Since Shivers began playing tournaments in Lubbock in 2017, he has won 11 of the city's major championships: the Hillcrest Swinger five times, the LakeRidge Stampede three times, the Reese Memorial Day Partnership twice and the Lubbock Country Club Par Buster once.
Cardinal, 38, played four years at Monterey, but did not play college golf.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur is a national championship for post-college golfers age 25 and over, most of whom pursue the game around a work schedule.
