LSU football updates at SEC Media Days 2023: Brian Kelly, Jayden Daniels live from Nashville

The 2023 football season is here.

LSU football will begin its second season under coach Brian Kelly in Nashville, as the Tigers will feature prominently on the first day of SEC Media Days on Monday.

Kelly, along with quarterback Jayden Daniels, defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo and running back Josh Williams, will speak with the media on the upcoming season before preseason practices for the Tigers begin on August.

LSU will begin its 2023 regular season schedule on Sept. 3 against Florida State in Orlando (6:30 p.m., ABC). The Tigers will then face Grambling State at Tiger Stadium for the home opener before facing Mississippi State in Starkville in Week 3.

The Tigers posted a 10-4 record in Kelly's first season, unexpectedly winning the SEC West and defeating Purdue in the Citrus Bowl.

Jayden Daniels feared Bryce Young, supported 2-point conversion call vs. Alabama

Daniels said he supported Brian Kelly's gutsy call to go for a 2-point conversion at the end of LSU's 2022 matchup with Alabama. In overtime, Daniels threw the walk-off, winning pass to beat the Crimson Tide, 32-31.

Daniels was in favor of the call in large part because of the impact of Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner.

"Ultimately it was Coach Kelly's decision to go for two," Daniels said. "I was on board with going for two for personal reasons because I didn't want to give Bryce another chance to go win the game."

Brian Kelly talks about being 'a fan' at various LSU sporting events

With LSU winning national championships in women's basketball and baseball and its success in gymnastics, Kelly has enjoyed becoming a fan of LSU sports while still performing his duties as football coach.

"I became a fan. I don't know what a fan is like, right? I'm used to them throw stuff at me," Kelly said on SEC Network. "To be able to go and sit with my wife and out family to a baseball game and watch it and be a fan was something I've never had in my career."

Brian Kelly speaks on use of accent in recruiting

Kelly has been working on perfecting his Bayou accent, he said after going viral for faking a Southern accent during his LSU introduction.

Kelly said he uses a different accent depending on where he goes to recruit, and he still needs to work on his accent when he goes to southern areas of the state such as Lake Charles.

Brian Kelly calls A.I. an 'intriguing opportunity'

Kelly called artificial intelligence an "intriguing opportunity" and said it's a tool that can help the Tigers in recruiting profiles moving forward.

"It's something we're about to venture into," Kelly said.

Brian Kelly shares thoughts on Notre Dame transfer Logan Diggs

Kelly gave his perspective on Notre Dame transfer running back Logan Diggs, saying that he likes his versatility out of the backfield.

"He's a big back with speed, vision. He just adds to that room with experience and that's what we're looking for,"

Brian Kelly comments on Northwestern, Pat Fitzgerald situation

Kelly shared his thoughts on Northwestern and its decision to dismiss coach Pat Fitzgerald at SEC Media Days. Fitzgerald was fired by the program after an internal investigation into hazing within the program.

"Coaches are the leaders of their program and when things are nit going the way they should be, there's an accountability and I don't think he's somebody that would walk away from accountability at any time," Kelly said.

Brian Kelly calls secondary a 'concern'

After adding four cornerbacks and a safety from the transfer portal this past offseason, Kelly points toward his secondary as still being a problem area for LSU heading into this season.

"When you have to dip into the transfer portal and bring in that many guys on defense, that's an area concern because you really don't know what you have until you play against Florida State," Kelly said.

LSU running back John Emery Jr. 'is in the process of being cleared' to return to the team

LSU running back John Emery Jr. is on the path to returning to LSU, Kelly said to local Baton Rouge reporters at SEC Media Days on Monday.

Emery sat out spring practices due to academic reasons after rushing for 375 yards and six touchdowns last season. He had also previously been suspended the first two games of the 2022 season and all of 2021 due to academic issues.
