Loyola Blakefield names Geaton Caltabiano its new soccer coach

Loyola Blakefield has named Geaton Caltabiano its new varsity soccer coach.

A 2009 Mount Saint Joseph and 2014 UMBC graduate, Caltabiano brings extensive coaching experience in the high school and youth club ranks. The Annapolis native, now 31, replaces Mike Marchiano, who led the No. 1 Dons to a 14-0-4 record and the program’s third Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship in his only season this past fall. In November, Marchiano was named an assistant coach for the University of Maryland’s women’s soccer team.

During his playing days, Caltabiano was a standout midfielder and captain who led the Gaels to the MIAA A Conference championship in his senior year before enjoying a standout career and being named captain at UMBC. He went on to play professionally for the Baltimore Blast and was part of two Major Arena Soccer League championship teams.

He served as boys soccer coach at Gerstell and as an assistant at Mount Saint Joseph and McDonogh in addition to coaching with Pipeline Soccer Club.

“I couldn’t be happier to be back coaching in the MIAA — I think it’s the best high school soccer league in the country — and especially at a school like Loyola. I don’t think it gets any better than that academically, the campus and facilities and everything else the school has to offer,” Caltabiano said.

Coming off the program’s first unbeaten season, the Dons bring back a strong nucleus led by All-Metro Player of the Year Dan Klink and All-Metro second-team selection Sammie Walker. Caltabiano is looking forward to the challenge of maintaining the program’s high standard.

“Obviously, the current team is super exciting. What Coach Marchiano helped them do last year in going unbeaten and winning a championship is very rare in a competitive league like this,” he said. “We’re fortunate to return a lot of players and starters and expect to have another strong year next year.”

After a detailed search, Loyola Blakefield athletic director Blake Henry is confident Caltabiano is the right coach to carry on the program’s success.

“We are thrilled that Geaton has accepted our offer to be the next head varsity soccer coach at Loyola Blakefield,” Henry wrote in a release posted to the school’s website. “Throughout the search and interview process, it was clear that Coach Caltabiano has a passion for impacting young men through coaching. He is a relationship-driven coach that wants to maximize the mind, body, and spirit of the players he coaches. We are excited to get him working with our student athletes at Loyola.”

Caltabiano showed gratitude to all the coaches who helped shape his passion and philosophies, mentioning, among others, Mount Saint Joseph coach Mike St. Martin, former UMBC legendary coach Pete Caringi and current coach Anthony Adams.

“They all played a big part in who I am and understanding the type of relationships you build with your players,” Caltabiano said. “I’ve been fortunate to learn a lot from some of the best coaches in the Baltimore area and I definitely have been able to benefit from all the coaches I played with and coached alongside.”
