Long Island Nets NBA G-League player Terry Roberts shot in Philadelphia

Terry Roberts, a point guard for the Long Island Nets of the NBA G-League, was shot in the chest in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Roberts, 23, was walking into a nightclub early Sunday morning with a teammate when he was struck by a stray bullet, CBS News Philadelphia reported.

“As soon as they got there and was walking toward the place, just seems like gunfire just erupted [from the place] that they just so happened to be walking into,” Roberts’ father, Terrence Roberts, told the station.

Roberts was rushed to a local hospital. He was taken off a ventilator on Monday and was able to speak with his parents, Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI reported.

No one has been arrested in the shooting. Cops said four suspects took off in a gray Nissan Altima, and an off-duty security guard opened fire on the vehicle, according to WPVI. Police are still investigating all aspects of the incident.

“He’s healing,” Roberts’ mother, Allison Roberts, told WPVI. “He’s doing well. He is in a state of shock. This is a traumatic situation that’s happened.”

The Long Island Nets, the G-League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, confirmed that Roberts had been “the victim of a crime.” There was no immediate timetable for his return to the team, though his parents told WPVI he was eager to rejoin the squad.

Roberts, who was born in Amityville, was playing his first season in the G-League, the NBA’s developmental minor league. He started his college basketball career at Florida SouthWestern State, transferred to Bradley for his junior year and finished with the University of Georgia. He averaged 13.2 points per game with the UGA Bulldogs and made the Long Island Nets roster before the most recent season.
